international comp calls
message from tracymidd on 23 Jun 2005
Is there anyway to stop these calls, No kidding every single day (at
different times) once a day i get a international call, ( caller ID shows
details )
always a computerised voice saying something about a holiday etc. ( this has
been for the last 3 weeks.)
Its really doing my head in. I am on BT,
When i was on NTL they stopped anyone who with held their numbers from
contacting me, (FOR FREE) and this stopped international calls too
( i know this as my mate from germany had to text me before ringing so i
could turn it off, (Anon caller reject) or something.
but when i phoned BT they said they can do 2 things one was Anon reject
which was xxx amount a month and the other
was choose to ignore or something 1st month free, then xxx a month
thereafter.
I am a member of the TPS/MPS/EPS (mobile/mail and telephone preference
service)
Is there anything else I can do to stop these.
Thanks for any help

won't stopo this
probably wn't stop this

The best solution is to stay off hook and go and make a cup of tea. Better
still press 9 (or whatever number it is today) to talk to someone and go and
have lunch. I had one of these progress up the queue and get several
different US tubbies for nearly an hour once, before I had to make an
outbound call and hang up...

Hi there the reason I never press the number someone told me if i pressed
the number i would be immediately charged a fortune on my bill....
is this right or wrong about being charged.............if not i will start
leaving it off hook and if i ever get to speak to any US tubbies,
I could tell them to remove my details (maybe I am still day dreaming) i
have never had this problem ever before.

Don't worry, you will not be charged a penny for pressing what ever number
they request, being charged for doing so on an incoming call is an urban myth.

They are talking crap.
You should push the button, because that then causes the caller to be
charged.

Urban legend.

OK

I wouldn't waste your time. The only time I ever spoke to them was about 3
weeks after "Florida Direct" had got my old mum's CC number out of her and
tried to fleece her for £££.

The canvassers are generally hard up students etc, gullible and innocent,
and in this case one gave me a stack of details - street address, phone
numbers etc.

The closers - now they know it is a scam.

The problem with that being of course it ties up your line for incoming
calls.

No, it's not the FBI, it's something like the Florida Department of
Commerce. Google for Florida in this group over the last three months
andI'm sure you'll find it. I put in a complaint by email to them, and it
was followed up by post, in a helpful and professional way. Strangley the
number of calls has dropped.....
I don't know it's a fact that they have been fined

if its florida direct you can report them to the miami office of the
FBI. I'm sure I read it here a few months ago that someone reported
them via the FBI website and florida direct were given a $10,000 fine.

Non I'm afraid, other than what has been suggested, and with BT they are not
cheap options.

If its 'Florida Direct' report it to the FBI Miami office. I read here
a couple of months back that someone had done that from the UK and
'Florida direct' were hit with a $10,000 fine.

Change your phone number, ask for a completely new one (i.e. not one
which BT is re-cycling) and make it ex-directory from day 1.

The only auto-diallers which can get you then will be those which
increment, e.g. dial 123456, then 123457, 123458 etc.

The preference services are fine for stopping calls from within the UK
but do not apply to calls direct from the US.

BT Anonymous Call Rejection does not block the calls. They show
"International" on the display when they arrive but later it shows shows
"Number Unavailable" when you scroll back through the calls.

No it still shows "international", but will report "unavailable" if your
ring 1471.

My CD50 is quite an early one, the later ones or other systems must
store more information.

If one happens to be present when the call comes in, one sees the text
INTERNATIONAL (of course), but the CD-50 two modes "NAME + NUMBER" and
"NUMBER" (sorry, been a while since I switched from one to other, and
you lose all entries currently in memory when you do). 30 entries can
be stored in N+N, while 50 for Number alone, I think. Peter Morgan.
