call progress tones in the UK and the Sipura-3K
message from john-h on 23 Jun 2005
Hello,

I just purchased a Sipura 3000 VOIP/PSTN gateway unit and am trying to use
it ehre in the UK. Unfortunately all of its default configuration
settings are for the North American system.

I have been able to figure out the settings to make the ring-back sound
normal, but I am having difficulty figguring out the correct Disconnect
Tone frequency/db as well as the loop-break duration.

The BT disconnect tone (the tone heard shortly after someone hangs up on
you) sounds close to a 400HZ tone to me but I am not sure about this and I
am not sure the DB level.

If anyone has successfully gotten the Sipura 3000 configured for the UK,
or if you know the proper loop-break duration time or disconnect-tone
frequency/DB I would really appreciate hearing from you.

thanks,
John

Hello Andrew,

Thanks for your tip regarding the time break being 90MS for my
Sipura/Spa3000 configuration.

Unfortunately, it still doesn't seam to detect the loop break with a value
of 0.09, unless I have the decimal place wrong!

The reason my SPA3000 usually gives for a disconnected pstn call (one
where the calling party hangs up) is something like: "Disconnect reason:
PSTN inactivity timer." This behaviour happens after the calling party
has hung up, a small click is heard (presume that is a loop break, but a
bit quick for that), then the line remains off-hook with the 400HZ tone
playing for about 25 seconds followed by a bit of silence and then it
hangs up.

My settings follow if you have any more ideas?

Thanks,
Monty

You don't need a disconnect tone. ~90ms should do for the timed break
recall.

BT Network clearing can include, in any order, a number
unobtainable tone (400 Hz continuous, 3 to 20 seconds), a
period of silence up to 30 seconds and a break signal
(disconnect or reduction in current for 90 to 130 ms).

Strange. The timed break doesn't have to be that accurate. You could try up
to ~150ms but other than that I have no ideas. Have you tried it manually
using a handset with a timed break recall button?

If you made the call and the other party hangs up, this should normally
initiate a timer of 1-3 minutes allowing them to pick up the call again (eg,
from another room).

It is possible that their operator uses "B-party clearing" or that the other
party is connected using iSDN or a VOIP gateway to the PSTN in which case
they can clear the call. In these cases I'd expect to hear NU (400Hz) or a
three-tone followed by "the other party has hung up".

What I don't understand is that presumably when the other party clears,
you'll also hang up. Does this not initiate an A-party clear anyway?

Regards
Andrew

BT describe their 'number not admitted' signal as 400Hz 0 dBm - 37 dBm.

Go to http://www.sinet.bt.com/ and navigate to SIN 350.
