18866 - any disadvantages?
message from Chris on 28 Jun 2005
Now that 18866 offer DD, I'm thinking of risking it and signing up.
Any last-minute warnings?

I've read the thread about dialling 118866 by mistake;
and I'm more concerned about how trustworthy and ethical the company is.
Do they record your phone calls - or spam you - etc.?

OK - I know that's a daft paranoid thing to say!
I'm really just trying to benefit from the undoubted expertise of this
group before, rather than after, taking action.

Feedback, information, and advice welcomed.

No probs at all... I have been using the service for 6 months now, no
problems at all.. Generally an excellent service.

Occasional outage, but these are *VERY* rare!

I doubt you`ll be disappointed.

We use nothing else here now... I always use Vo-ip with it, and the rest of
the phones in the house use the normal dial in service.

may or may not be a disadvantage when you make a call you will come up on
recipients phone as INTERNATIONAL which can cause problems with people
ignoring the call or being unable to use 1471. All down to 18866 routing
calls

I have been getting a lot of engaged tones using 18866 lately. Had to
default back to BT to make some calls (National) and got through right away.

Still worth a try .... it is very very cheap!

Well there was someone on here about a month ago who claimed they have poor
security and it was possible to make calls on someone else's account...I haven't
got a clue whether this is true or not...

I have been using the service for several months with no problems
but use now 1899.com . For me on NTL line they are better bet
for UK calls to landlines and mobiles.

Regarding the interception and recording of your phone calls, it would
be necessary for them to get your consent, e.g. by playing a recorded
message telling you that your calls will be recorded before connecting
you to the person you want to speak to.

I've been a user since a couple of weeks after they appeared on the
scene. Use them at home and have no problems at all.

Also we signed up for them at work, and have been using them there with
no problems. And a lot more calls are being made from work than my
home, so we've certainly been happy with them.
