Virgin & T mobile problem
message from mrh on 28 Jun 2005
I have a problem,

I recently unlocked a VK530 phone so we could use my wifes virgin sim
card. The unlock worked but when I put the Virgin SIM in it logged on
to the T mobile network. Whats going on and how do I get it to work on
the virgin network?

That is because O2 PAYG phones are locked to the service provider (O2)
and not the network (O2) where as most[1] T-Mobile phones are only
locked to the network (T-Mobile).

Your phone would not work with another service provider (Tesco) even
though it used the same network (O2).

[1] I actually had a T-Mobile T68i that was locked to the service
provider (T-Mobile) and I could not use a Virgin SIM in it.

T-mobile provide the transmission facility for Virgin. SO it will
physically use the T-mobile network while operating as a Virgin
account.

I mean O2 and Vodafone PAYG handsets are usually GID1 SIM locked so in
some cases you cannot even use a contract SIM from the same network!

The fact that Tesco GID1 SIM lock their phones is not the problem,
here.

I could have shown you my T68i with GID1 SIM lock but I have now
unlocked it!

You don't need to unlock T-Mobile phones if you wish to use the virtual
networks that run on T-Mobile, such as Virgin, Fresh and easyMobile.

If you call Virgin they may be able to send a logo, or update a setting.

Usually phones are able to use the SIM to pull the right name up for the
network ID. I take it your mobile is just using the phones database of
network IDs. Even though the name displayed on your mobile is "T-Mobile" with
a Virgin SIM in you will definately be on Virgin

If Virgin are unable to assist, email me and I can sort something out for you
FOC.

That's odd, because I had to unlock an O2 phone, to use a Tesco
SIM in it (Tesco runs atop O2)

You mean O2 also GID 1 Sim locked, as well as SP lock,
maybe sometimes?
Yes, Tesco usually GID1 Sim lock
??? I've not seen a T Mobile phone GID1 Sim locked,
Virgin on the other hand usually do

All the Virgin phones I have seen have been GID1 Sim locked.
