| Rejecting calls from anyone who's not in your address book |
| message from Martin Underwood on 24 Jun 2005 |
Do any mobile phones have a mode that allows you to choose to accept calls
(ie phone rings/vibrates) from people who are in your address but to divert
calls from anyone else to your voice mail without the phone ringing?
This would seem to be a very useful facility: there are times when you want
to be "in" to your friends but "out" to anyone else.

IIRC the Sonyericsson P-series do this.

When I want to do this on my Nokia 6310i I just set up a profile called
"Friends" which has all those I want to be able to call me in it. Calls
from other numbers will ring out to the caller (and eventually pass to
voicemail) but the phone won't ring.

My SPV-C500 (Windows Smartphone) does that with an add-on bit
of software called SmartFilter. Allows me to set individual
contacts to divert straight to voice mail, or to divert calls
with no number displayed, or an unknown number. They show as
missed calls, so I can see who called before I bother with a
call to voicemail.

So it looks as if it requires a fairly specialised phone (ie not a
bog-standard Nokia that's provided with my Vodafone contract through Mobile
Phone Centre) and add-on software.
It ought to be so easy for manufacturers to include this functionality to
provide it as an alternative to normal ring mode, discreet mode,
silent-but-vibrate mode etc.
I wish manufacturers would include features like this rather than colour
screens, games, web browsers (how many sites can be browsed in a screen that
has a resolution of about 100x100 pixels?). Similarly it costs the earth to
get a phone that can act as a modem for my laptop: I know I could get a
Vodafone Cardbus card, but those are nearly as expensive as a phone and
require a second SIM and Vodafone connection, otherwise it involves faffing
around removing the SIM from my mobile every time I want to use it - and
resetting all the details like time/date that are losdt when the battery is
removed. Why can't phones set their date/time automatically to values that
are broadcast in the phone call data packets, I wonder, like VCRs can sync
to the teletext date/time? Maybe others can - I've only got experience of
Nokias.

I pretty much agree with you. I wish mobile phone manufacturer would add
useful features to their phones instead of those stupid useless cameras,
camcorders, 2 billion color screen, video calling and so on. However
everybody has different needs and i think that the smartphones we were
talking about (either the symbian based ones such as the Nokia 6630 or
Sendo X or Windows Mobile based ones shuch as the Orange SPV 500 or Moto
Mpx 220) are (partly) the answer for this problem. Since they are based on
an open OS, developers can develop any kind of applications for them which
allows you to customize your phone to suit your particulat needs. These
phones are still quite big, heavy and expensive but you can expect to see
them getting a lot smaller and cheaper in the next few months/years. As a
matter of fact, the Sendo X can already be bought SIM free bundled with a
Bluetooth headset for under £140 which is cheaper than most normal phones
today.

Agree with you on all that - except the big about them being big
and expensive. My C500 is no larger than my old T610 and cost me
£145 for it on Orange PAYG and another £20 to unlock. The unlock
can be done free now, and the phone has been seen for £130 if you
look hard enough on the interweb.
Some people don't like the navigation and the (typical Windows)
fact that the same keypress doesn't do the same things in every
menu, etc, but overall, this is the very best phone I have ever
owned and has basically replaced my Dell Axim X50v as my PDA. I
may even be selling my Axim due to lack of use now.

Most SE phones have the ability to receive calls only from a specified list
of numbers, other numbers being diverted to voicemail, and have done for
quite a few years.

I agree, but they sell to mobile networks, who make a lot of money
from people using those features, so the networks want them in the
handsets.
|
| Jon replied to Martin Underwood on 27 Jun 2005 |
The majority of handsets can do this, even relatively cheap ones.
Again, most modern handset will retain date/time when the battery is
removed by using a small internal battery to keep power supplied to
these functions.
Indeed, my C500 and M2000 can sync to any ntp server.

Can you group people in your address book? Can you assign specific
ringtones to groups or individuals?
I have a "ringtone" (actually it's a second of silence) as the
default, and all those in my address book have different ringtones
assigned, either by group or individual. So if I receive a call from
an unknown number or a withheld number - no ring. It's not an
immediate divert, of course, but it's pretty close.

The treo 600 and 650 can use programs like callfilter to do this.

My SE P910i does this, so after I finish work I can screen call to
Accept Only from Contacts..., all others go to ansaphone.
Also, the phone can handle multiple address books and have individual
ring tones assigned to contacts.
Good luck!
