| Pay as one goes on unlocked phone? |
| message from on 24 Jun 2005 |
Be gentle with me, I'm not a fan of phones. I simply want an emergency
mobile and m,y question is: If I buy a cheap unlocked phone on eBay,
can I use it as a pay as you go?
Thanks

Mobile - With £5 Credit & £100 Worth of Free Texts for £19.99 and free

Yes - make sure it is dual band and use Voda or O2.
Ideally you should use a foreign SIM as this will roam, but keeping it on is
messy.

Possibly so it sounds like you are using a mobile.

Yes - your next problem is choosing which network - which will depend
upon things like the handset being dual-band etc.

Pieter,
Be *really* careful about buying secondhand or new phones off the internet
unless you are buying from a
reputable dealer.
I'm sure there are plenty of good sellers BUT...
Hardly a day goes by without someone posting here that they've bought a
phone off the net and it now
doesn't work.
There are many scammers that will sell you the phone - it will work OK for
a while - then they report
it stolen, the networks block it and you are left with a phone that won't
work on any network - and they
get a new phone into the bargain.
Oh and don't expect much help from the ol' bill - or auction sites - if it
all goes pear-shaped
Your best bet is to buy a PAYG phone from a supermarket - or any of the many
high street outlets
Prices start from about 20UKP for a basic model
DM
PS don't forget to charge it up every so often otherwise it may be out of
juice when you need it.

And if you buy from a store you get guarantee, manual, new battery and maybe
some technical assistance.
The risks in buying cheap phones from e-bay just aren't worth the minimal
savings, especially when sellers hike up the postage charges to cover e-bays
fees.

These comments are good, but the guy wants an emergency phone. Not emergency
GPRS handset with xHTML browser and 1.3-megaweetabix (mmmmmm weetabix)
camera with integrated shaft utility.
So i imagine even a nokia 6100/6510 would fit the bill, bet no scammers have
been selling them lately then blocking them!

Much better to say be really CAREFUL when buying ANYTHING off ebay.
