| PAYG in the USA |
| message from Michael Rodgers on 27 Jun 2005 |
Hi all,
Off to the States in Saturday, specifically Boston/NY area, and would like
some sort of reasonably cost effective mobile solution while I'm there.
Orange want 130p a minute to make calls and £20 a meg to use GPRS. This is,
frankly, a joke. Even if I want to call a local US shop or something, 130p a
minute.
So I've thought about getting a PAYG SIM for my 6230, and using that. Any
recommendations and info about weather this is feasible? I'd like to be able
to use GPRS occasionally for MSN and IRC on my PDA so if the supplier offers
this then thats great, otherwise low priced regular data would be fine as
well.
Any ideas? Cheers.

T-Mobile To Go SIM cards work ok, but be aware you are charged per minute
not per second and also for incoming calls. Not sure about data though,
never tried to use it over there.
You should be able to pick up a SIM in a T-Mobile store, last time I
checked they were $50 with $30 of airtime.

Data is a no-go.
Or much less on eBay. May even be activated so you'd know the number
in advance prior to your touching down in the US.

Data use is restricted to the a special WAP home page and the few links
immediately connected to it. It's designed to pay your bill, sell
ringtones, etc. Access to the net in general, using alternate gateways,
has been disabled.

Or you could buy my part used T-Mobile US SIM card for £15, with some
credit $4, which you can top up on arrival, Walgreem, Radio Shack,
T-Mobile etc.
See previous posting
Or buy a couple of Cingular SIMs, one each, free calls between, just
back from US, part used.
£40 with $10+ credit on each
Don't know about WAP / GPRS, don't use it
Neither will work in UK

You can get it from the above poster (USASIMCARDS) since he is also in
the UK and you don't have much time, or you can buy from ebay and have
it shipped to an address in the USA. Tmobile should fit the bill. Most
of the cards on Ebay are already activated too, so you just pop it into
your phone. You can even change the areacode to a Boston or NY areacode,
but there is no need.
As you can tell, it's all over ebay:

You can change the area code to whatever you want. Mine was a Brooklyn
code when I bought it but I changed it to San Francisco as that's where I
was going to be. It helps to have the same code as the numbers you will
call most, as unlike the UK you can dial just the last 7 digits, as you
would from a landline.
Just ring Customer Services and ask them to do it, it takes about a couple
of hours.

Not everywhere- it depends on where you are. Many parts of the country
have instituted 10 digit dialling. Boston's 617 area code when I lived
there, for example.

New Jersey, too.

You could get "prepaid" service from either T-Mobile or cingular.
This would work for voice, but unfortunately neither offers a workable
solution for use of data for prepaid. T-Mobile prepaid SIMs are
commonly available on eBay for less than cost. Occasionally cingular
prepaids will show on eBay as well.
