Considering the fact that this is a newly released handset and the old
superceded model (Nokia 6230) is currently far more expensive on
contract (in terms of minimum term cost), what follows is a stonking deal.

One Stop Phone Shop are now advertising the Nokia 6230i with a 12 month
Vodafone CrossNet 200 tariff (for those a little confused, this is
basically the same tariff as Anytime 200) for free, with 8 months free
line rental. In addition to this, they are also offering £10 additional
cashback to customers who purchase online. In terms more familiar to
those who are used to my way of describing these things...the minimum
term cost of this deal is only £110, or £9.17 per month.

For those not in the know, the Nokia 6230i is the recent replacement to
the popular Nokia 6230. The improvements include the addition of a video
recorder and an increase in camera resolution from 0.3 megapixels to 1.3
megapixels.

This deal is structured as follows: The normal line rental for CrossNet
200 is £30 per month. Your service provider will charge you this amount
on a monthly basis until you choose to cancel the contract (this
contract is cancellable after 12 months). The advertised minimum term
cost is achieveable via cashback from the One Stop Phone Shop in three
equal parts - £83.33 each time after 4, 8 & 12 months.

WEALTH WARNING: This deal is dependent on claiming cashback from the
retailer. For those unfamiliar with the machinations of cashback
contract deals, please read my article on this subject:

Seems a good deal. Now is it unlocked I wonder?

DeeBee replied to Tim Rogers on 22 May 2005
Looks like it can be unlocked with the software on unlockme.co.uk

Also the unlock request forum is full of requests for this phone and codes
are given out, so it looks promising !

probably not, but i would have thought it could be unlocked freely from
the usual sources.

Richard Colton replied to Tim Rogers on 22 May 2005
There's a good chance it will be unlocked unless it's a Voda Live handset.
I'm not sure if the unlocking algorythm has been changed for the 6230i, so
it may be a good idea to get in touch with OSPS to check just in case it
can't be unlocked by the free calcs.

Richard Colton replied to Richard Colton on 22 May 2005
Nope, I was wrong - they can be unlocked by the usual free calculators.

Yeah I've been told the same by the nice lady I spoke to there, she said
to just ignore what the online order status page said.

With regards to the itemised billing, I forgot to query this when I
spoke to them, I'll give them a bell tomorrow if I can remember.

The improvements include the addition of a video

I have a 6230 not i, I can make video clips on that but dont have a 1.3mp
camera

Reestit Mutton replied to Oliver Gunnell on 22 May 2005
Oops - sorry about that. My mistake.
The improvements of the "i" model over the non-"i" model are as follows:

Video recording now up to a maximum of 1 hr (6230 is 4 mins)
Video resolution up to 176x144 (6230 is up to 128x96)
Still camera resolution of 1.3MP (6230 is 0.3MP)
Screen resolution 208x208 pixels (6230 is 128x128)
Internal memory is boosted to 32MB (6230 is 6MB)

6230i also has 3x digital zoom whereas the 6230 has no zoom function.
However, I don't rate digital zoom functionality as this can be achieved
after uploading to your computer and it always loses you resolution
(which, even with the 6230i, isn't very high by digital camera standards
to start with).

I cant help think I have been bent over and shagged, why cant we have had
that spec
from the beginning theres nothing there that was unheared of on other phones

I think the 6230 not i, is a very poor phone from nokia the camera was
useless with no zoom
what so ever, full of bugs with voice dialing on bluetooth phone wouldnt
turn back on somtimes

Is there such thing as a phone that does not crash anymore?

Reestit Mutton replied to Oliver Gunnell on 23 May 2005
Don't be disappointed by the lack of zoom - you can digitally zoom your
photos on your PC if you want by uploading them first. OPTICAL zoom is
what is missing in mobile cameras ATM and that's what you really want
(iy CAN be done, I've seen credit card sized cameras with this
capability so I know it can be fitted into a phone, just no phones yet
offer this ability.

However, there are one or two phones available with falsh, which is
worthwhile as most mobile photos are taken at parties an the like and
without a flash, they fail miserably in low light situations.

Sadly, this is how the industry works...if they gave you everything
upfront in the first model, they wouldn't get the upgrade business downline.

There's nothing we can do to change this ATM unfortunately.

My gut feeling is that the manufacturers have the ability to add more
functionality than they are currently offering but they are holding back
to be able to release yet another upgrade model somewhere down the line.

Thankfully, I have no need for additional functionality in my handset as
I'm happy that my 6310i does everything I need in a phone (I have a
decent digicam and a 30GB photo iPod and I'm happy to use these items
independently from my mobile) so I'm not quite as shagged as you are by
this.

RM

so I'm not quite as shagged as you are by

LOL Glad to hear that, I moved from Motorola from a V600 to the 6230
I was just a little disapointed that the nokia camera and screen were
quite low in picture quality compaired with the Motorola, but alass
the Motorola had really poor battery life and needed charging what
felt like every day.

The 6230 seems to have very hit and miss bluetooth, sometimes you
press the headset voice dialing button and the phone may or may not
respond to you pressing it, again Motorola V600 never did this

Just seems the quality has fallen in a rush to bring out a new model
every other week, I had no trouble in the past with -----

5110
6110
6210
5210
T28

V600 poor battery
6230 bugs, crap camera unless your lucky and got a I.

I am not bitter like ;-)

<snip>

Has anyone here gone for this? I've done the deed today but my account
status on their website doesn't show anything about the "8 months free"
cashback deal or the free text bundle, instead just showing "3 months
half price line rental - network offer".

I've mailed them back to enquire if the order has actually been
processed correctly but as yet no response, will try them again
tomorrow.

Oh and incidentally, there was no mention of itemised billing options
during the order process so you'll need to speak to them directly about
this. I'll raise it with them tomorrow and see what they say.

Reestit Mutton replied to Toby Groves on 25 May 2005
I've already checked this with them - they acknowledge quite freely that
the 8 months free offer is genuine and they say that the account status
simply still points at their old system which, unsurprisingly, is now
out of date (the correct details are on the new CPW one).

Afterall, it says that it's a "network offer" and Vodafone stopped
offering 3 months 1/2 price with this tariff at the end of April so it's
clearly just out-of-date information.

Also, the 250 texts is a new offer so it's not surprising that it's not
covered by the details listed against your account if they relate to
last month's network offer.
