Best for TXT?
message from Dave White on 25 Jun 2005
Hi there.

Can anyone suggest which network might be best for text messaging, as in,
best value? I send alot of texts to Ireland and the United Arab Emirates.
These appear to be costing me 24p a pop. I'd prefer a PAYG.

Thanks

Dave

If you got a Java enabled GPRS phone, use vgsmail
http://www.vgsmail.com/ . It's a non-commercial internet to SMS gateway
which allows you to send SMS to anywhere in the world for 4.1p per message.
You can send your texts either from your mobile (with the Java app or your
WAP browser) or from your PC. You get 20p free credit when you sign up to
test that it's working fine with your phone. I'm happily using it to send
SMS to the UK, Ireland, France and Germany with no problems so far.

Totally agree. I use it all the time when in Ireland (as today) so texts
back to the UK are only 4.1p plus gprs costs which are currently zero on my
PAYG SIM. I sent about 15 today to both UK and Ireland at minimal cost -
cf. £4.50 by conventional methods.

Cheers for that, I use a Nokia 6230 - I'm not sure if this is Java/GPRS?

No problem with this phone, it's Java and GPRS. What you could do is open
an account on vgsmail and try with the free credit to see if that works for
you. You'll need to choose a username and a password and give them your
email (to be notified of any pricing changes) and phone number (so that the
texts sent from your vgsmail account look like they are coming from your
number). Then download their free Java application
http://www.vgsmail.com/vgsmail.jar and try on your phone. Keep in mind
that, even though i've had no problems with this service so far, it should
not be used for urgent or important SMS as reliability is not 100%
garanteed (that's why it's so cheap). If you have any problems, they have
dedicated forums here: http://forum.vgsmail.com/
