message from Franco on 29 Jun 2005
Can anyone help, I'm looking for a reliable mobile phone for my daughter,
camera not needed but colour screen, IRda mode, SMS, Games etc.

PAYG as I already have a SIM card for her.

Can anyone advise?

Let your daughter choose - whatever you choose will be wrong.

I can't argue with that, but I've decided to go with a Nokia 8210/VT sim
free mobile as we've got a SIM for her already registered, It's not got a
colour screen but she seemed to like it!

The nokia 6100 off ebay for about £25 unboxed, about £35 boxed, is very
good.

The nokia 3100 doesn't have IRDA but has got good reviews, long battery, MMS
etc, with java games.

The 3100 will set you back a bit more though as far as I'm aware. I had a
6100, and liked it a lot, it's superceeded now by the newer business range,
but she'd prob like it, it's very small and very light, nokia say it was
their smallest ever - i guess by dimensions. It's not short in length, but
rather thin, which is good.

a nokia 8210, seriously?

It's for an 11 year old girl, and it's cost me £23.99, her school has banned
camera phones and It's nice and small, I'm sure there are a million phones
more reliable/better specced etc but I'll be dead of old age by the time
I've weighed it all up and do any more research

Yeah it's not easy, it's good to get your child into a normal state when it
comes to mobiles - if you give them colour screen with starbust camera with
integrated sherbit, they'll get hyper and moan about getting a new phone for
xmas - which makes a boring xmas pressie if you ask me, which you haven't
yet; but you may do if you're bored one day and fancy a mundane chat...

Anyway yes, as i was saying, it's hard to compare phones; the one you got is
fine, but feature wise the 6100 i mentioned is similiar but updated, and
also allows pic MMS messages - but at the end of the day i think you went in
the right direction. Yippee!
