Another ringback scam?
message from XCIM on 25 Jun 2005
Hi All

I just got a call from 07094 698714 which rang a few times then rang off
just as it got to the phone.

I dont normally ring people back but was curious, it rang then said, we are
trying to locate your contact, when i then put the phone down.

Is this another scam ??

Who are they and where would they get my number ??

Cheers

I never ring any numbers back I do not know, certainly never any beginning
070.

Auto dialing a sequential series of numbers.

My house number is X Directory and only 3 days old , brand new number
and I started to get spam calls. The recorded one about a holiday.

Same here - and while BT maintain that it's a random dialler, I don't
believe it. In several years of having an ex-directory number, I've
not received sales calls before. But since moving in here, I've had
numerous sales calls from the same company - so if it's random, I'm
being very unlucky. I'm quite certain it's simply that BT have not
kept the number unused for long enough for it to be dropped from
calling lists.

This has worked for myself, and I recieve no calls at all that I wouldn't
want otherwise...

It wont work for callback scams. In fact now that i think of it, we've had 1
of them in our lifetime.

Has'nt BT brought out the Annonymous call barring yet?? Jaysus!!, It comes
as part of the package on NTL and certainly stops the spammers ;-)))

Thats the problem my brother-in-law had. The "ex-directory" number he
was given by BT turned out to have belonged to an insurance agent and he
get getting calls from irate clients. The next number he was given used
to belong to a Nat. Trust property! In the end he had to move to NTL
because BT could not guarantee an unused number.

Jon replied to XCIM on 27 Jun 2005
Yes.

I had two of these calls yesterday, both supposedly from 070xx xxxxxx
numbers.

Lord knows.

Randomly generated.

Peter Corlett replied to XCIM on 25 Jun 2005
0709 46 is "pn2" rate, which is 50p/min at all times. It's allocated
to Pipemedia Ltd.

At 50p/min, what do you reckon?

Random dialling.

I've just had one from 07008 098995, again "pn2". This time, it's
allocated to TelXl Ltd.

What's the betting that the scammer has got service from a load of
telcos, to make it harder to shut them down?

Andy Pandy replied to Peter Corlett on 25 Jun 2005
I thought revenue sharing was banned on 070 numbers. If it is a scam then is the
telco involved? Or am I missing something?

FYI replied to Peter Corlett on 27 Jun 2005
I have two seperate accounts with vodafone, and got a call from this
telXL number, (07008 098995) - once on my contract vodafone and then
the next day on my old PAYT vodafone. They are both registered with
TPS, and I have no idea how they got both my numbers. The thing is, I
always have my mobiles to hand, being used for diffrent purposes, but
on both occasions, my phones rang for just a fraction of a second, and
I had no time to answer the calls. Naturally, I did what anyone would
normally do and rang the caller back, only to be told that the my
contact could not be found. I intend to complain to the authorities,
but for now here is an address to complain to if you find yourself in
the same position:

(Info from Companies House)

Name & Registered Office:
TELXL LIMITED

HIGHFIELD HOUSE
1562 STRATFORD ROAD HALL GREEN
BIRMINGHAM
WEST MIDLANDS B28 9HA
Company No. 04249562

Company Type: Private Limited Company
Nature of Business (SIC(92)):

Could it be that these dodgy companies are actively using the numbers on the
TPS to call people. With TPS you may be aware that scams are about, as
you've joined up not to recieve sales calls. But by the same token, perhaps
you then expect that all calls to your phone are likely to be legimitate,
and you call back!

Kevin I Chapple replied to XCIM on 25 Jun 2005
Who are they?? Don 't know
Where did they get your number?? Don't know.

With regard to "We are trying to locate your contact", this COULD be
legitimate.

Are any of your friends "techie aware", that may have got themselves a
personal number??

I utilize (sometimes) a similar system.

"Trying to locate your contact" could be that the system is checking 1 of
three numbers (home, office, and mobile) for the person that called you.

Is it a scam?? Pass.

Good luck.

Just looking at this post, i thought that you couldnt ring out from these
070 numbers?
So hence yes i guess it would be a scam.
Who collects the payment from these numbers when rung? BT or the owner?

Jon replied to The Prof. on 27 Jun 2005
Indeed. The 070xx xxxxxx number range is for personal "follow-me" type
numbers which simply divert to a normal number. Whoever is doing this is
faking the caller ID in an effort to generate revenue from their 070xx
number.
