frog going to sleep
message from zungmonkey on 31 Jul 2002
I know this has been asked before but i didnt read the post. What is tehe
solution to getting the frog to NOT go to sleep.
I am connectng using win 2K / WinRoute and because of BTs crappy uptime i
get disconnected regularly (4 to 5 times a day). The probelm is that if the
connection is lost for a long period of time the frog goes to sleep. Is
there a solution to this problem.

thanks

Coffee????

Seriously untick the 'allow device to turned off' or something to that
effect under the modem properties in device manager

Everyone is talking about getting rid of the frog!!

Do you need to change the connector from the existing BT wiring to go the
pci route? What else do you need to do? Are there a lot of settings that
need changing?

I'm really stuck by this one too - saving for a router now! As far as
I can tell Winroute is doing all the right things at the IP level
(NAT, port forwarding etc). If a forced disconnection occurs (ie pull
phone plug out) then the modem drops the connection, Winroute notices
and begins to redial (which is what we want)

but...

every few days the connection drops and Winroute is unable to start it
again. In this state the interface has gone down, but the RAS
connection is still up. I think this could be a RAS/Alcatel problem
because it still occurs when I disable Winroutes control of RAS. A
manual forced disconnection and reconnection brings both the interface
and RAS back up - but its annoying that this doesn't happen
automatically.

The alcatel is a hunk of junk.

I have forgotten the URL, but I was reading that some Alcatel ADSL
modems stop transmitting ATM packets (which transport PPP packets,
which transport IP packets) after renegotiating line conditions.

ie every now and then the modem tries to establish which freqencies it
can use for ADSL, but this process appears to fail and hence cause
problems.

To be honest, I wouldn't mind the occasional line drop so long as it
is recognised by the system (RAS) and hence allow a reconnection. My
next plan is to try Linux, and see how that copes. I've got a test
system working and it seems OK (it appears many of the early problems
have been overcome with new drivers and patches which are now included
as standard in the new kernels).

I think I'm going to get bored of messing around with the speedtouch
before long and just get a router - its just not suitable for a 24/7
connection (in my case). For most people who switch their PC on, check
mail, surf for a bit then turn it off again its probably 100% OK !
