| message from David Middleton on 8 Sep 2002 |
Hi All,
I am getting a D-Link 504 ADSL router to use on a home network. I
would be grateful for recommendation for good compatible NCI cards
that work well with this router. I have been looking at the D-Link
DFE-550TX. Has anyone used one of these,if so are they any good.
Thanks.
Bye for now
Dave.

Since all you need is a bog-standard 100Mbps Ethernet card, why pay
any more than is necessary? These cards all comprise essentially a
single chip controller from one of half a dozen makers, and there
isn't much to choose. A card for less than a tenner will work fine -
have a look here:

It is only Ethernet - get any old 10/100 card and it will work just fine.
I have a Linksys. There should be no compatibility issues.

Whilst any old card will work as Don says, if the idea is to run a home
network you want a card that will auto detect and install, and is not prone
to errors increasing network traffic. Personally, I would go with 3Com
as a first choice, and a Intel chipset network card as a second choice.
I cannot offer an opinion on Dlink, I have never used them. There
are many good deals on ebay.co.uk
Cheers

Thanks to everyone for your help. I started to look at various models
but when i started looking at the features of them all, i got lost.
Due to the fact that i didn`t now what the hell it all meant. As i was
ordering the DSL-504 from Ebuyer i just ordered two D-Link DFE-550TX
cards as well. (God i hope they work O.K.). Once again thanks for all
your help. I will probably be back here once the router arrives.
Bye for now
Dave.

Hi David,
I have used both DLink 550 and the 3Com 3905C cards and found them both work
well with the DSL 504, so you should have no problems. Both run at 10/100.
I assume that you are using WinDoze, so let them either autoinstall with the
WinDoze driver or use the one supplied on a floppy. Again I have used both
ways and had no problems. If you get stuck for the driver you can get them
off the manufacturer's site or drop me a line and I'll zip n' mail it to
you.
Kind regards, Mike

I used to use a Linksys card, but that suddenly died (nothing to do with the
router obviously), so now im using a 3Com SOHO card, which XP detects and
installs without any bitching.
But if the OSI model is anything to go by, then compatability between a NIC
and switch is pretty irrelivant (just need a card that Windows can install
without having a fit).
