Shortlist of ADSL modem/routers; help me choose
message from Gra Machree on 15 Feb 2003
I could do with some help. I need to go wireless at home, with three
university students in the house next year, plus running my own business
with a couple of colleagues. I'm ok technically, but not trained. I've
done enough study to be a danger to myself. Stop me running with
scissors. Help me choose.

I have short-listed to the "usual suspects":

Netgear DG824M D-llink DSL-604+ DrayTek 2600We

Inevitably, there's something I like or dislike about each.

* My two colleagues run Netgear 814 equipment - so it might be
helpful if we all shared the same technology. I can also argue the
other side of that coin and say it might be helpful, for diagnostic
purposes, to run a mix.
* I do like the extra speed of the D-Link. But I also know the only
time I'll see the speed is basically when I do backups (usually done in
background anyway with Second Copy). Also, it does not explicilty
mention a firewall, unlike the other two.
* The Draytek seems to have, by a nose, the best reviews (perhaps a
tad more flexible, with an easy setup). But its also more expensive - I
can see both the Netgear and the D-Link for £159.99 The cheapest I've
seen the Draytek is £175. The extra £25 isn't going to break the bank -
but what am I actually getting for it.

In terms of my requirements, its the usual standard fare of email, ng's,
browsing and downloads - plus a few extras. I run an FTP server for my
son's bands .mp3's. I need to VPN to a couple of clients (note, I do
not yet see a need for anyone to VPN into my setup). Friends and family
overseas like ot use Instant Messengers, voice, video and file
transfers.

The current setup is PC's running a mix of XP Home and XP Pro, running
ICS into BTopenworld Home 500 (dynamic IP address). I've run into
problems running VPN over ICS and issues with hosting FTP behind a PC
running ZoneAlarm. Those issues, plus the increased number of PC's
spread about the house are driving me to upgrade.

So, if you feel strongly about equipment, setup, requirements or have
any hints, terrific. Which router would you select?

Thanks, John

Can't speak for the wireless version, but have a vanilla Draytek2600 - Best
investment I ever made, moving up from ICS.

Firewalls a doddle to use, same with the port redirection for running an
FTP - Have had no problems with it and so easy to use I've done the usual -
Not bothered to read the instructions.

I was running a FTP 24/7 behind the 2600 and ZA Pro without problems but
have since dropped ZA from the picture totally as it didn't seem to get any
unexpected alerts in about 6 months. Can't speak for the other routers but
amongst other things the 2600 has a nice dynamic DNS feature updating the
DNS automatically if/when your IP changes.

Loki.

Seeing as you want to use messenger, voice and video you will require a
router with Universal plug and play, I use a D-Link 504 which has UPnP so I
would think the 604 is capable as well(but check yourself to make sure)
