| Netgear DG814 and remote access from outside |
| message from scofer on 9 Jan 2003 |
sorry, this is a bit long.
Hi,
Can anyone tell me how I can connect to my home computer which is behind a
Netgear DG814 (firmware 4.4). Computer IP is 192.168.0.2. Router IP is
192.168.0.1.
The WAN IP is on DHCP but I use www.whatismyip.com and dyndns.org.
I want to connect from anywhere on the internet using either WinVNC,
pcAnywhere or Windows XP remote desktop.
I setup a custom forwarding of the relevent ports (tried vnc and xp remote
desktop).
I forward the ports to my 192.168.0.2 pc (followed instructions, seemed easy
enough).
But when I try and connect from somewhere on the internet I cant connect.
When the client winvnc or xp remote ask for the host I type in:
x.x.x.x:port (where x.x.x.x is the wan ip of my router, and port is the
port I setup to forward).
Am I missing anything, or doing something wrong? Is it even possible with
this router?
Many thanks for any help, this is driving me nuts.
scofer.

Hi,
Have you had any luck on the subject below? I am trying to get it to work as
well. You stated below that you are running version 4.4 of the firmware v4.6
is now out I have upgraded but with no luck.

Where I was going wrong was when I was testing it, I was using another pc on
the same lan to connect to it via the netgear (using the wan ip of
ourse) - I found out this will never work, you must use a completely
different internet connection e.g dialup to test it.
(when connecting to a device on the lan you must use the internal ip e.g
192.168.x.x) but when on the outside world you use the wan ip of the
router.
Once I did that, it worked perfectly.
Let me know if you still have problems.

Ok, Is is possible that you could tell me what port forwards you have setup
for PC Anywhere, Win XP Remote Desktop Connection and WinVNC on your DG814
as I don't have them setup.
Cheers,
Wayne

XP Remote Desktop is port is 3389 - I use this with no problems
VNC: see here
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/faq.html#q53
pcanywhere: 5631, 5632 I think, do a google search to confirm.
If you have xp pro as your host pc then the Remote Desktop is the best way
to go for remote control.
