Netgear DG814
message from Deadly_M on 23 Aug 2003
Can anyone shed some light on the problem with the DG814 from NETGEAR ?
Is seems very unstable , ive tried various versions of its firmware but that
hasn't helped much.
Its either that i cant log into it to change settings or that it looses its
ADSL connection
sometimes i get corrupted HTML when i log into it
If i run Overnet or E-donkey after about 5 mins it drops the connection and
i need to re-boot it
What is going on ? , is this a legit reason to demand a refund ?

Thanx in advance

I believe from other things I've read it's a well known problem, especially
with the filesharing apps you mention. I'd say yes it is adequate reason as
it doesn't function as expected from the advertised desription....

You're pretty fortunate. At least you have a connection. I'm on my third
DG814. The previous two just stopped working for no apparent reason. Hoping
that third time is lucky.

A good place to go to is www.adslguide.org.uk and search the forums there.

Just out of interest, as I have been considering the DG814, what
recent firmware versions have you tried?

Many thanks, Nick

4.9 has been very stable for me.

4.8 has been stable for me, but then again, in the five months I have had
mine, every version has been stable............

Netgear technical support emailed me 4.9 RC1 for my first failed DG814. It
didn't make a half ha'porth of difference. They then sent me a new DG814
which also failed. They then sent a third DG814 which I haven't installed
just yet. I'm to nervous. At the moment I'm using a Alcatel 330 usb modem
which I bought dead cheap on eBay. It's working faultlessly, touch wood.

snip

Overnet or E-donkey will cause the router to drop its connections this has
been reported many times in forums during the last 6 months.
If you try E-mule you will find that the problem will disappear

Dear All,

Have you seen the following link?

The DG814 is mentioned as one of the flawed hubs!

Have you tried to set Idle Timeout to 0 in Basic Settings! I personally have
not suffered any problems/issues with my DG814, I seem to be one of the
lucky ones. I am wondering if this is an issue with BT Wholesale DSLAM
hardware and/or DSLAM firmware updates, I know my local BT exchange uses
Fujitsu DSLAM hardware.

I could be wrong, but there does seems to be a lot of people out there
experiencing problems with DG814 and just as many not having any problems.

As of yet, Netgear support have failed to come up with a firmware version
that fixes all known issues/problems.

You may have a legit reason for a refund, but trying to establish the
problem is with DG814 can be difficult at times, unless you can use a
friends ADSL connection at the same BT exchange or even a different BT
exchange.

Ask the retailer to test it for stability or exchange it for a new one. Get
your ISP to test your ADSL connection. Plug the DG814 directly to your BT
master socket with micro-filter, to eliminate any problems with a telephone
extension. When you do a firmware upgrade, Netgear recommend a revert to
factory default settings and re-input settings.

Oh, I currently use firmware 4.8. If you get corrupted HTML when you log in
to DG814 router, just disable your firewall software.
