Netgear DG814 - many many problems
message from steve on 20 Nov 2002
I've just bought a Netgear DG814 ADSL router and I'm very not happy. It was
supplied with firmware version 4.3 and I straight away downloaded 4.4 and
flashed it.... first thing I found was that it wouldn't accept incoming FTP
connections. This is certainly something to do with the router because as
soon as I changed the port the FTP server was running on all was fine; ie my
port forwarding was set up correctly. I downgraded back to 4.3 and FTP
works just fine on port 21.

Second problem (or "design feature") - you can't access a web server running
on the internal network by putting the external IP or domain. This is bad as
I'm running Apache with virtual servers so it won't resolve properly. I
have got round this by editing my local HOSTS file but it's not ideal.
Again, port mapping was set up properly.

Third and most major problem is that the router crashes every few hours;
loses the DSL connection and no access through the WAN. needs a hardware
reset. Netgear tech support sent me some firmware - which turned out to be
4.4 RC5 - and it still crashes.

Anyone else had any/all of these problems? Help!!

Want to buy a D-Link DSL-504 ... any experiences?

Regards,

Steve.

1) Yeah I found that problem with the Update Firmware too, thats why i stay
with 4.3.

2) Yep, im "tims" reply, this is the same... The NAT confuses destinations
when you
send from the same address. There maybe other ways around this but
this is just
the way it is with most NAT based technologies.

3) As stated, sound like your idletimeout is not set at ZERO. Otherwise
sounds like
bad router. It happens. But if u mean your connected to a host for
more than a
coupla hours and then lost connection, and the pc thats connected is
the DMZ then
thats what happens.

Ive had this router since June, and I think its good. Its got auto sense
and looks good.
It got its problems and what ive heard aint ever gonna be UPnP. I blame
microsoft
for that cos they created that and didnt make any considerations for old
compat. sake.

Im waiting for move then goto nildram. They give me 4 ips so i can shut
down the NAT
and just use the IPs :)

I think the options for home users on BT openworld SUCKS.

Firmware version 4.4 has FTP port 21 closed. If you want to open port 21 or
change it to another number then you must edit the netgear.cfg file using
notepad. If you set the ftp=open then the default port 21 will be visible on
the internet, normally this is closed on Firmware version 4.4, you have been
warned. You'll have to contact Netgear support if you want more infomation
about this FTP access through a hidden page. DG814 crashes WAN connection
dropped and/or can't ping router's LAN IP address, make sure you set Idle
Timeout to 0. If your DG814 router is dropping the ADSL connection (Internet
light goes out) with your BT local exchange it could be there is a problem
with BT ADSLAM hardware. My local BT exchange is using Fujitsu hardware the
other is Alcatel, I know the DG814 has no problems with Fujitsu ADSLAM
hardware but Alcatel ADSLAM cards may cause some DG814 & Solwise SAR-715
routers to drop the connection. BT was aware of this problem and resolved
the issue.

Why flash it up - was it broken?

You can't access the external IP address from the internal network with
*any* router - not a DG814 problem.

Are you sure the disconnect-on-idle feature is set to zero?

Still one nasty bug with 4.4, the bloody DynDNS isnt updating anymore !! :(

Oh well, I can live without that for now :)

Only reason i wont go buy another router is that:-

1) The DG814 works better than by Alcatel Speedtouch
everdid.

2) Aint gonna shell out another 126 quid for another
router (plus or minus on the price)

3) Look sstylish enough, plus i like the auto sense stuff.

4) Just cant be bothered.

Dont think I take/give critism lightly...I like it, allows me
to think up solutions and points of view (shoot anne robinson)...
