I have got the new DSL-504 Router working with the new firmware!!!
message from rp2000 on 25 Jul 2002
After initial fear of "killing" the router I finally managed to upgrade the
firmware. No more crashing web interface I hope (2 hrs and counting). The
layout of the config pages is much easier and it is easier to forward ports
for stuff like ftp www pop3 etc. you can redirect ports by using machine
names on your Lan (but only the ones that teh dhcp on the router dishes out.
my pc is static and my sisters is on the dhcp. so it can forward to hers by
machine name, might change my own one to dynamic as well)

The router syncs with teh exchnage quicker after a reboot and connects
faster. (for me anyway). You can update teh firmware from teh http
interface and you can back up old configurations from it too.

I dont think the telnet has changed much but i havent tested it yet. there
is also a summery page of machines on your lan if u use its dhcp.

Well worth the upgrade I would say. If you need a hand gimme a holla....

Hey rp,

I tried to update from the http interface but didn't know which file the
image was. Which file do I point it at to work??

Which version did you update it to??
I am currently on the R2.01.b2 but it keeps crashing every few hours. I
mailed dlink and they sent me the 202b2t8 vers and said that would be
better.

I've upgraded to the latest version from 1.14, it seems to connect faster,
the web interface does not lock up and the UI looks a bit more organized. So
far it has been stable.

I upgraded because it allegedly allows port forwarding to named computers
rather than just IP addresses - very useful if using DHCP. Well as with all
DLINK software upgrades nothing is quite what it seems...when you first
setup port forwarding you can choose a computer name from a dropdown list of
DHCP clients rather than input an IP address, however it only uses the
computer name to lookup the IP address and stores this is the port
forwarding table. If the computer is assigned a different IP address next
time it reboots then you are stuffed, the port forward table is static and
still holds the old IP address.
