| Download Speed Problem |
| message from doslnmd on 11 Aug 2002 |
I have been having a great deal of problems with my download speeds lately
:( I am on HG11 and since friday my download speeds have halved! :o This
does not make me a happy bunny!
I have tried everything possible my end to fix the problem including
reconnecting, rebooting, unplugging alcatel modem, rebooting, plugging it
back in, updating drivers, formatting XP even as far as creating new Master
Boot Records and primary partitions and installing Windows 2000, and
swithing USB ports to make sure it wasnt a power problem (even though it's
normally plugged intp PCI USB card so power shouldnt be a problem).
So now I'm sure it must be a BT problem, so does anyone else have this
problem or am I the only one suffering? :( Anyone know of a fault BT
currently has that would cause this?
In any case BT are gonna get a nasty phone call from me on monday!
Thanks for your help :)

yeah having exactly the same problem - here is a set of tests just complete
from adslguide
Do not use your connection until the test has finished.
Downloaded 32768 bytes in 2964ms
Slow connection, trying 131072 bytes.
Downloaded 131072 bytes in 11827ms
Now starting download test
Downloaded 131072 bytes in 11813ms
Estimated downstream speed is 86Kbps.
Uploaded 133120 bytes in 25546ms
Estimated upstream speed is 40Kbps.
Results stored.
Test complete.
Anyway why wait till Monday to phone them - support is available 24 hours a
day on 08456007030 (home users) - 08456007020 (business users)

You're not the only one - I'd had this for about a month so far on HG9...
ring up support (open 24/7 on 0845 600 7030) and report it..

I'm pleased it isn't just me (see my post above). My problems also started
around the same time on hg13.
Checked this morning and things have improved, but still only downloading in
the high 40k/sec. Wonder what's going on?

Whats wrong with 40k a sec. Dont forget that the 60k(ish) that everyone
expects is really a maximum speed you should expect.
Even speed test sites have a limited ammount of bandwidth they can use and
with the increase of ADSL users using the site more and more often i would
be happy with what you have.

I don't know whether this will be any help, but I had similar problems
using an otherwise excellent Zyxel Ethernet hub and router, mainly in
the evenings. I assumed it was congestion and was negotiating fairly
robustly with the support people.
However, I've found that reducing MTU from 1500 to 1450 has
consistently and reproducibly solved the problem. Downloads moved
immediately from 10-15Kps to 50 -60Kps. If I move tha MTU back up
again, speed slows dramatically. Why speed was OK in the mornings
without this tweak, and why it works, I have no idea - but I'm no
network expert.
Using a 800MHz flat screen iMac with Mac OS 10.1.5, if anyone's
interested :-)

It might be worth a try Mike. How do you adjust these settings?
Thanks,
