| ADSL Router |
| message from Michael Hill on 7 Aug 2002 |
Having recently installed an ADSL Router so that I can use ADSL on my laptop
upstairs, I have found a problem in sending files.
I am not able to send files across the net anymore for example using IRC or
MSN.
Anyone know how to allow me to send files now?

These are known problems with MSN using NAT which most routers use
including ICS (internet conenction sharing).
Do use IRC you need to open up ports 3000 thru 5000 on mIRC as stated
in the DDC send/recieve preferences.
In the router login you should have pass thru ports option, so just copy em
out
of mIRC to the router port forwarding section, some routers have examples of
this, or what i do is turn on the DMZ to my PC network address and therefore
lets all ports forward to that machine.
MSN doesnt work due to something called uPnP (universal PnP) and from what
some1 said they will fix it in a l8r issue..Micro$oft again trying to push
people
towards something they want you to use...GODDAMIT!!!!

Well there are 487 other vendors besides Microsoft in the UPnP forum
www.upnp.org
Looks like the future of connecting devices in a home network (and others)
This article is quite relevant
"UPnP NAT Traversal FAQ"
http://hometoys.com/htinews/aug01/articles/microsoft/upnp.htm
Right now I wouldn't buy a router that wasn't UPnP compliant, or at least
had an update in the pipeline

Stating the make of router would be a good start, and a search on
groups.google.com would probably tell you how to set up the port
mapping you will need.

Michael,
This information may help you with messenger
To enable voice and video communications with Windows Messenger through a
non-UPnP firewall, configure the firewall to allow incoming traffic on UDP
ports 5004 - 65535. >>> Can't see you doing this somehow, so i'd forget
voice and video.
For other purposes, enable the following ports:
File Transfer: 6891 (to allow 10 simultaneous file transfers open ports 6891
through 6900) >>> This is easy, in fact you only need to forward port 6891
to send one file at a time, if you want to send more forward more ports.
Application and Whiteboard Sharing: 1503
Remote Assistance: 3389
To make mirc work correctly you need to make some changes in dcc options and
again forward a few ports.
In connect, local info menu make sure your lookup method is set to server.
In dcc, options, reduce the dcc port range, ie first 1024, last 1025, like
messenger you need to let it use more ports if you want to send more than 1
file at a time.
Then on the router, you need to forward some ports
Forward port 59 TCP to machine running mirc
Forward port 113(ident) TCP to machine running mirc, make sure the ident
server is running on mirc
Forward port 1024 - 1025 (if you want to send more than 1 file at a time you
need to forward more ports see above) TCP to machine running mirc
This should enable you to send files, and respond to ident requests
correctly.
Regards
Nick
