| 2M upgrade. Dodgy results. Suggestions/ advice pls |
| message from Vortex on 24 Jun 2005 |
Hi,
My ADSL recently was upgraded from 512k to 2M. I am 6k from the exchange.
I use a DSL604+ router. Business Serve is the ISP.
At first the connection only worked a minority of the time. Downstream SNR
was marginal (never better than 4dB) and when it swung low the connection
was lost and the router would not negotiate. When the connection was up it
worked very very well.
BT man came and checked things at my end and that night the SNR magically
improved by 6dB or so. I assume a tweak at the exchange.
Now I have a 24/24 service but tons of line errors. The result is that
performance compares to 512k.

Questions: Will a carefully chosen router improve matters (Draytek Vigor
has been suggested as having a special firmware release for marginal lines)?
Should I get BT to remove some of the gain they put in (if indeed that is
what happened)? Am I flogging a dead horse...and should I therefore try a
regrade down to 1M?

what's the attenuation ? if its 58 dB then dropping to 1M would be
wise. If its 40 dB then you have a noise problem to work on.

If I understand my router correctly downstream attenuation is 63dB.

BT's limit for 1M is 60 dB so you're a bit far out for 2M.

Mines 63dB as well with a poor SNR margin. I hope BT don't just bung me
onto 2Mb when they eventually get round to the exchange upgrades.

does the Guesstimator at www.bt.com/broadband say you can have 2M ?
