Have you tried getting rid of all the carpets and going for hard
floors? It makes an enormous difference to the amount of airborne
dust.
I'm not asthmatic, but am sensitive to some house dusts. I've found
that as carpets were removed, the situation improved.

Curtains too - awful things. I've got blinds instead. A vac with a filter
is a big help - most vacs just redistribute dust everywhere. Nightmare.
Avoid bagless vacs - just end up exposing yourself to all the dust when you
empty it. Ionisers help if you don't mind the mess. Always dust with a damp
cloth, then polish if necessary.
I'm allergic - look like a lab rabbit when I start :( Hence the username...

There is usually not much problem.
In this case, something had been let die or new life had formed in the
bag before it was emptied, and the filter really needed washed, but I
diddn't have time to wait for it to wash.
