Joining CAT5 cable

message from Roland Burr on 12 May 2004
Well -ish. I've been planning to network our 2nd PS2 and also put in an
iLink connection between them. Now they are in rooms far apart and you
cannot buy v long ilink cables nor I think can you buy ilink connectors???

I bought a short cable and chopped it in half and planned to put a RJ45 plug
on the end, 2 wall sockets and CAT5 in between to route it upstairs. However
the ilink wire is so fine it's too small for my RJ45 crimp connectors - can
anyone suggest how I can suitably join them together?

Is the system using iLink (firewire) or CAT 5 ? Firewire, at most, can only be run
for around 5 metres, so if you need longer than that you might be in for a few
problems. Do your systems have COM port connections ? If they do, then it is
possible to connect them together using direct cable connection through UTP
(unshielded twisted pair) or CAT 5 between them.

<snip>

Keene < http://www.keene.co.uk/system/keene.htm > can supply IEEE1394
'boosters' and IIRC the cable.

Come back when you've learnt how to post properly.

I think he has a good alias, 'Mindwipe', his posting style certainly
suggests his brain is some what empty !....

By PS2 I mean two Sony PlayStation 2s which can use iLink (which is indeed
firewire) to connect. The total run will probably be about 10m but I figure
it'll probably work (if it doesn't it's not the end of the world). Intend to
have iLink cable spliced into two with RJ45 connector on it at each end
going in to an RJ45 wall socket which in turn is connected by CAT5 cable.

Then you're asking for problems. Firewire is only good up to a max' of 5 mtrs and the
use of CAT 5 to transfer the signal from Firewire to Twisted Pair and then back again
is not really going to make anything work properly.

Have a read at this page:

The monitor cable I'm using now is 25m long

Don't think there's a problem running video over much longer distances
than this - given the correct cable. But 5 decent 'BNC' cables would make
for a rather thick snake...

Lurch replied to Nick Brooks on 14 May 2004
I'm guessing he made it himself.

Toby replied to Lurch on 15 May 2004
about a 25m monitor cable

Or bought it, these are fairly common for fixed installations or exhibition
use. i.e.

Belkin Pro Series High Integrity Monitor Extension Cable 25m = £40 / 60m =
£90, although their claim that 'it makes the flow of data faster' sounds a
bit amazing.

Used them before, and they do seem to work just like a 2m cable, although it
is unlikely one would need to run a screen at 1280 85Hz in this application.

Nick Brooks replied to Toby on 17 May 2004
Correct, I bought it from Extron. They do monitor cables upto 75m

I'm using it at 1600 x 1024 at 72Hz on a widescreen monitor

Ps also had to extend mouse, keyboard and wacom tablet cables!

Just what I need for my projector then

I didn't think that sort of length would work

geoff replied to Roland Burr on 14 May 2004
Are you telling me that you're running a PC monitor with a 25 m cable?

Where did you get such a cable ?

geoff replied to Roland Burr on 13 May 2004
I think it's a case of suck it and see

The monitor cable I'm using on this computer is 8 metres, a bit longer
than it should be, but with a good quality cable it works

Roland Burr replied to Roland Burr on 13 May 2004
Well I'm going for a couple of 4 pin firewire plugs bought from the US whcih
I will put on teh ends of a CAT 5 cable and hope the electrons are kind to
me :)
