Fitting extractor fan underneath lintel |
| message from Ric on 24 May 2004 |
Hi there,
I am wanting to fit an extractor fan in the bathroom but the bathroom only
has one exterior wall on which is a window with only about 2' of wall on
either side. I am wondering what implications there will be to sticking a
hole in the wall underneath the lintel. Would a 4" hole cause a problem?
Thanks in advance,
Ric.

I'd advise you not to drill holes in the lintel as holes will greatly weaken it.
If you have two feet of wall either side of the window, then these areas should
be your plan of attack.

Directly under the lintel where it gets it support from the wall underneath
would be one to avoid for me.
Depends how much it extends into the wall I suppose.

It depends on a number of factors:
1. How far the lintel extends beyond the window aperture
2. What the lintel is holding up
3. How far below the lintel your intended hole is
Unless the answers are 250mm or more, not much, and a decent distance (maybe
400mm?) it doesn't sound like a very good idea!
