External Kitchen drain problem |
| message from ikr2 on 12 May 2004 |
Our kitchen drain is situated on the patio just outside the kitchen. The
pipe from the bath/ bathroom sink and gutter terminates about 5 cm above
the grate. The pipe from the kitchen sink does likewise.
This means that the grate is sometimes blocked in the autumn by leaves and
the drain overflows onto the patio and is damaging the brickwork in the
drain. Also there can be a lot of splashing from the bathroom pipe at
other times of the year.
I want to put the pipes through the grate to stop the splashing and cover
the drain to stop the leaf blockages. I'm a complete novice so is there
anything I should watch out for and am I doing the right thing? Where do I
get the parts from?
Also the brickwork on the house side of the drain looks like it needs
repair. It is a bit green and worn - do I call in tradesman and if so,
what sort?
Thanks,
Ian

That 5cm gap is not right. They usually go through the grate these days.
You should use solvent weld externally. You can get couplers and pipe at
many places.
Modern pipes are 32 or 40 mm

When they built my new kitchen, they simply cut holes in the plastic drain
grid covers and fed the pipes thru'. I've never had a problem, just brush or
hose leaves etc. away.
Bradfords, Jewsons and so on down here, but any builders merchant/ plumbing
supply will be able to help.

No worries about rats etc. coming back up the pipe or are the pipes too
small?

Good builders merchants (and Screwfix) sell replacement drain gratings with
the circle to be cut out marked in the plastic so it looks neat as well.
