Be careful out there |
| message from Rob on 13 May 2004 |
I have received the following serious information via a contact at the
London Ambulance Service which has units closely associated with South
London police squads which are involved in fighting Gang Crimes.
Some 'street gangs' in London (particularly South London at present,
but it is sure to spread) have initiation tasks which new gang members
have to carry out to be admitted to the 'gang'. The latest craze is to
drive around, deliberately with no lights on their cars. The first
person who 'flashes' them, points at them or sounds their horn at
them, has to be followed by that new gang member in their car, who
then has to fire a shot into that vehicle! with no regard as to who is
inside.
The LAS official instruction is that if they see a vehicle with no
lights on, they are NOT to 'flash' it etc. and the advice to friends
and family is that you should ignore any vehicles you see without
lights.

What's been going on for years is this Urban Myth - utter tosh (though I met
a bloke in the pub the other day whose brother knew someone it had happened
to). Spreads FUD and does nobody any good...

of course, and they do this while dressed up as Tellytubbies humming the
theme tune to 'The Magic Roundabout'.

Really? I doubt it.
It's like the Urban Myth that horrified everyone a few years back- that
gangs were abducting people on the street, surgically removing a kidney to
sell on the black market, and leaving the victim alive but traumatised on a
street corner.
The fact that these stories are utter bollocks without a single
substantiated piece of evidence in their favour seems unimportant to the
simple-minded gullible people who gleefully circulate this tosh.
Here's another one everyone seemed to accept without question-
"The average person swallows 8 spiders a year while asleep".
No they don't, it was total invention by a writer who wanted to show how
gullible some people are, and it paid off because this story circulated the
world via email and many people accepted it.

What was the name of the bloke who invented the they that used to
believe the world was flat? The denouement took a Monte Python serial
myth killer to alert me. He blamed another Yank I think.
I might have guessed where this thread came from by the way.

Check your cross posts. Be careful out here.

I lived in LA for 5 years, and there were occasional news stories relating
to cars being shot at after flashing their headlights at someone. It's the
kind of mindless idocy that I would expect from LA gang members.

Yeah whatever Bob. You fail to mention that LA gang members would probably
shoot a driver if he even stared at you through the window.
|
| Dave D replied to Bob on 13 May 2004 |
Sure, there's some gratuitious violence carried out all over the world by
gangs. The original post is still untrue though.

I can't help but flash at passing vehicles. I often get arrested, however.

Too much masturbation.

These gang members - are they black?.......
However, I have a + 2 tonne vehicle - and would not hesitate to ram anyone
who was trying to take pot shots at me. Hopefully they would crash and burn
to death, but if they just received serious spinal injuries, that would be a
plus.

I have queried this 'story' with a friend who works for LAS and liaises
with DARE. It is not true.
