windows wont start |
| message from brandy on 2 Jun 2004 |
A few days ago, I came home to find my computer more or=20
less non-functioning. The taskbar and desktop icons had=20
disappeared, and some of the running programs had shut=20
down (but not all of them). There was a message on the=20
screen stating that there had been a problem or error of=20
some sort with symantec anitvirus and the computer had to=20
shut down. I clicked ok, and several minutes later=20
nothing had changed. So I attempted to restart using ctrl=20
alt del, which was also unsuccessful. As the task bar was=20
gone, I couldnt shut done using windows, and the start=20
menu keys appeared to be diasabled as well. Finally I had=20
to turn off without shutdown. I then tried to start up,=20
and now the computer is stuck in a cycl=EB: it attempts to=20
restart, goes to a black menu stating that start up=20
failed, would I like to try to start normally, or in last=20
good configuration, or in one of the safe modes? There is=20
also a 30sec countdown to restart normally. None of the=20
options work. They all attempt to start, then flash a=20
blue screen too quickly to read (although we have managed=20
to make out a few words, namely anti virus, run, and=20
failed), then it shuts off and starts over with trying=20
again and going to the same black screen with the original=20
options. I have also tried all the f8 options, all of=20
which do the same cycle to the blue screen and then to the=20
black. The countdown on the black also does the cycle.
In the week leading up to this, I had recieved several=20
times upon startup the box saying windows had recovered=20
from a serious error. I sent the error report, and was=20
told by microsoft that the problem had to do with the=20
synaptics touch pad (it is a laptop), although the touch=20
pad seemed to be functioning normally. All virus scans=20
came up clear the day before. I have been advised that,=20
since my virus definitions weren=B4t up to date, although I=20
used an online virus scan, that one still could have=20
slipped through.
I am running XP home. Thank you so much for any help or=20
tips you can give. The main objective is, I need to=20
retrieve 2 files, and then I can simply restore the=20
system. If I can somehow obtain the 2 files, I don=B4t care=20
if the only option is to reinstall windows. So, if anyone=20
has any ideas on how to get to those files (they are in my=20
documents), I would be very grateful.
Thanks again! Please feel free to email the given address=20
with any and all suggestions.
