volume initialization problem

I have a gateway computer. Every time I reboot and get the system running, the wave slider is set to maximum. Everything is much too loud. I need to go into the volume control and lower it. On another compuer (a dell), this problem does not exist. How can I fix this so the volume initializes at a reasonable volume?
