sound & image skipping

Help!! My sound is skipping when I play a music CD...unable to burn anything. Also, when I try to play a toddler computer game, the image is terrible and sound also skips. I have a Dell 4550. My hard drive is 96% free, plenty of memory. It is 1 year old. Is there something to update? I am a computer novice, please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
