screen going black

I am running windows xp on a hp pavilion 7850, when i switch users or log off the screen goes black right after the computer closes the page that was running at the time.When this happens i lose all control and have to hot boot. It is getting so bad now that even if i turn the computer of and someone is still loged on the screen goes black and everything freezes. Can anyone help. Thanks Russ
