possble virus |
| message from Tony Cooper on 31 May 2004 |
My daughter's computer seems to be affected by some virus. Using
Windows XP, when she turns her computer on it starts to load but
before the desktop appears it turns itself off. It's as if she tried
to re-boot right in the middle of the boot process. Sometimes it will
stay up.
She has a current copy of Norton, but I don't think she has it on
automatic update. I doubt if she's download the MS security patches.
She lives in another town. I'm going up there next week. Are there
any file extensions I can have her search for (when she can get
computer up and running) to see what virus, if any, is on there?
Can I download MS patches to a CD and take the CD up there and install
on her computer?

To save downloaded updates
To set Windows Update for downloading the updates for later
installation
instead of installing now:
Go to Windows Update
Click on Personalize Windows Update (left column)
Click "Display the link to the Windows Update Catalog under See Also
Click Save Settings button.
When you're ready to download:
Go to Windows Update
Click Windows Update Catalog (left column)
Click on Find updates for Microsoft Windows operating systems (or,
Find
driver updates for hardware devices)
Select your OS & click the Search button
Select what you want; Critical or Recommended
Select the downloads you want and go to the download basket.
You should also download ad-aware, spybot, stinger and cwshredder
to perform scans looking for malware.

Print this(or email it to her).. Have her go through the list.
Suggestions on what you can do to secure/clean your PC. I'm going to try
and be general, I will assume a "Windows" operating system is what is
being secured here.
