misc. programs will not start... |

I am having a problem with programs not starting. I am noticing more and more that after a successful install, I cannot start the program. Usually it involved double clicking the program icon or .exe file. Then, I can see for a split second that the program flashes on the screen, then disappears to never-never land. I've had this happen with a few programs and it has occurred over a period of time. Luckily it is not really important programs. Usually games for my daughter or misc. programs I've tried. I do uninstall and try to reinstall without any luck. I've also checked out all the compatibility settings, and nothing has worked.
I appreciate any advice!
