I put together a P4 w Intel mb D845EPIL. CD Rom only peripheral, 512mb ram. Win XP pro. It ran fine for a couple of months, then started locking up frequently. Thought it might be a virus, but have ruled that out. Even installed a new hd. Same thing. Figured it must be the mobo, so I bought a new one, same model. Swapped the ram out for one that was running fine. Replaced the ide cables, just for the heck of it. Problem persists. Re-installed xp on the new drive and it runs through the whole install successfully, but hangs on final reboot. I can then turn power off and restart and Windows runs. ... (more) |

| While browsing this newsgroup I have noticed a common problem with users not being able to delete a folder, file or program. I was having to reboot my computer just to delete a My Documents Folder after moving or deleting its files. I have found that by ending and then restarting EXPLORER.EXE in Task Manager, it resolved the issue without having to reboot or use any special programs or commands. I have been unlucky enough to get infected with Backdoor.Tofger and although Norton deleted it on arrival I am unable to restore my Internet Explorer homepage - it's stuck on some random search engine site whith a large link to "Spyware Removal". I have followed all of the instructions on the Microsoft, Norton and Sophos Websites but cannot find any of the downloaded entries in the registry. I have found the offending internet address in the registry entries for Internet Explorer start page, default page etc but as soon as they are changed back to my home page and the regedit is closed they revert to the suspect site. Hello, I just bought a new PC that came with pre-installed XP home. I tried to upgrade to Pro and the process is interupted and restarts itself at step 4, like ten times in a row with no one even touching the PC. | I just did a new installation of Windows XP Pro because I was having problems with the one I had. After the installation, the Ethernet Controller doesn't work anymore (Control Panel-->System-->Hardware--->Device Manager). Under "Other Devices" in the Device Manager, there is a question mark by the Ethernet Controller. I tried clicking on properties and reinstalling the driver, but my system restore CD does not have the Ethernet Controller on it. Do you know where I can download one ?
