I’ve inadvertently clicked for a XP Small Busi software update - I don’t have XP Small business. Every time I boot XP Small Business attempts to install the updated files; naturally, the original disk is required to complete the installation. My Inspiron 8000 laptop running XP Pro has started to freeze. The cursor and clock freezes but the keyboard buffer will accept a few more characters. It lasts about 20+ seconds and sometimes freezes a second time right after the first. The clock catches up when it returns. It can happen a few times a day or many. Virus checked 2 days ago and removed generic trojan. No sign since then. Seems to happen mostly when using the cursor movement plate. Checked event log many times. Sometimes I get an i804prt ring buffer overflow error, but not every time. I increased the buffer capacity but it made no difference. Any ideas? ... (more)

I posted this question before but I can't reply, I keep getting error messages so I will post it again. I can't search for documents, my computer locks up and doesn't even attempt to search anything. It shows that the search is not responding and I have to end the task. It used to work and now it doesn't anymore. I did a defrag and error scan and it still will not perform the search. Scanner could not allocate required memory. Quit other application and try again. I called Epson and they said it was the way XP allocates memory to programs and they could not help me, I need to contact the operating system manufacturer. Nice huh. Boot from the CD or you can insert the CD while at the windows desktop but when the setup screen appears, exit setup and reboot. If your system is set to be able to boot from the CD, it should detect the disk and give a brief message, during the boot up, if you wish to boot from the CD press any key. ... (more)
