I had installed XP Home Edition a while ago on my pc. I now feel the need to re-format my drive and re-install XP on it. I am currently using NTFS on my pc. I tried re-installing XP but it does not allow me to format the drive prior to the installation. How can I get around that without finding a Win98 machine and using the fdisk.exe to fdisk my drive. I had installed XP Home Edition a while ago on my pc. I now feel the need to re-format my drive and re-install XP on it. I am currently using NTFS on my pc. I tried re-installing XP but it does not allow me to format the drive prior to the installation. How can I get around that without finding a Win98 machine and using the fdisk.exe to fdisk my drive. When trying to open a text file by double-clicking, it does not launch the notepad program. When right-clicking the text file, and choosing "Open With" (and subsequently NOTEPAD.EXE) the file does not open. But opening NOTEPAD directly, and then opening the text file through the "File->Open" menu does open the text file successfully. Has anyone had this problem? Does anyone know of a fix? ... (more)

Using WinXP Pro, all critical updates installed. I have my Internet connection coming in to my Windows box on one NIC; that connection is shared and firewalled, and the other NIC is connected to a simple five-port hub. I manually configured that second connection (called "LAN") to have an IP address of 10.10.10.1, and gave my WWW & FTP server (same machine) a manually configured IP of 10.10.10.10. I set up my internal machine to have the correct DNS and gateway settings, so it can access the Internet just fine through the Shared Connection. But on the firewall, I have the ICF configured to route packets incoming on port 80 or 21 to 10.10.10.10. Problem is, whenever I try to get to my internal webserver via my external IP, it gives me a "Connection Refused" error. This is because ICF is dropping all those packets, according to the log file (C:\WINDOWS\pfirewall.log). There is, in other words, not a single byte of traffic to my internal server. No activity? Do you see the 'hourglass'? Or just your pointer? If you see the hourglass, then there is activity. Check to see what is running in the background, therefore loading at startup. Click start> run>type in msconfig Go to the startup tab and see how many programs are loadiing at startup, and uncheck those that you don't need. Post back with your results. I have 4 things that load when my pc starts, one is the antivirus program ccApp, the other is the ccRegvfy, and the other two are incidentals. ... (more)

Click start> run>type in msconfig
Go to the startup tab and see how many programs are loadiing at startup, and uncheck those that you don't need.

I have tried everything I can think of to try to get my comp to recoignise that I have a mic... I have followed every step I found out about, including going through all of the control panel options. Here is the thing: the comp I am using now is a slight upgrade from the one I was using a month ago ( just more starting memory and a dvd burner, otherwise no difference ), the mic worked fine on the old one, but this one is acting as though my mic doesn't exist!!! this and the old comps are both from SPM micro out of montreal, the mic in question is a labtec ( I have 2, 1 is a headset, the other a tabletop mic, both worked in the old comp ) I have gone through system info, I have gone through device manager, i have gone through everything I could think of, but no matter what I do I cannot get the system to even see that I have a mic. I don't really want to have to send this thing back, because of the days it would take to get the software reset to the way I want it. any ideas, folks? Galen ... (more)

Toshiba wants to allow me $104.00 for a trade-in (duh, they sell computers) and does not recommend a software upgrade. Am I doomed by insufficient memory and processor speed, or can I fix this by upgrading to XP home edition? I don't care too much about speed, I just can't tolerate crashes. Since getting XP my dial -up modem stops responding after a few minutes on the net.I disconnect from my ISP and reconnect.It works again for a few minutes or so and stopps responding again.My little screens are still up in the taskbar but not flashing,the status of my connection shows that I am still connected also but nothing works until I disconnect from my ISP and reconnect.Internet firewall is shut off. ... Same problem here. I take it there has been no support on this issue. I've uninstalled the com port. It came back and said the winmodem driver was causing it to crash. I uninstalled that (DSL, ETHERNET connection). Went back to the com port device preventing standby. ... (more)

When i try to log onto my computer, i click on my name, which is the only user on the computer, enter my password, and i get an error. it says something about not being able to verify windows(?). so, i click okay. it goes back to the log on screen, and i repeat the prosess, and it allows me to log on. once i'm in windows, many of the program icons come up as an icon that doesn't have a host program. for example, if i try to open a document, a screen will pop up asking me to select a program to run the application. the other times, i get a warning that says "not enough system resources" or, "not enough quota to process this command." i don't know what to do, since i didn't buy this computer from dell or gateway, i bought ti from a person. it is windows xp professional, and it's only about a year old. please e-mail me if you have any idea as to what i can do, and if i have to re-image then i will. ... I have a new Dell Inspiron 9100 notebook with Windows XP Pro. I want to use my oldish "MS Natural Keyboard Elite" with it USB adaptor with this system. Unfortunately, when I plug in the keyboard to this system (which has no PS/2 ports), I get a USB device not recognized error message. I've tried to find a USB driver for this keyboard, but haven't been sucessful.

My speakers are always cracking, at first I tried to turn the volume settings down, then I updated drivers on my sound card(SB audigy audio[B800]) without any luck. Then today I bought 4.1 surround sound speakers and thay were also cracky so I realized that it couldn't be the quality of the speakers makeing them crack. I don't know what else to do. HELP! ... I havw a Sony VAIO P4 running XP Home edition. Recently I connected my new Sony Camcoder to the PC . It asked to install some software called PIXELLA. I said ok despite a warning from Windows that that this software is not XP certified. Since it came with a new Sony Camcoder, I proceeded with the installation which worked fine. Problem was next time I started my computer, it told me that HAL.DLL is missing or corrupt. I tried F8 and safe mode Same problem. Tried F2 and reset Bios still same problem. It seems it is having a problem reading the C DRIVE. Since the XP came with the computer I do not have a CD. The Sony Recovery CD wants to reformat my drive wiping all my data.
I called Sony they were no help Told me to Re-format.
Anyone knows what I can do??
