Use one disk (the new one). Make it Master (jumpers), connect and set BIOS accordingly. Device Manager: Make sure all devices are properly installed. I have the exact same problem except that I ran a test on the memory. Got a couple notices that I was running low on memory, but I have 1 GB. Now all I get is " boot failure - system terminated" I formatted the C drive and reinstalled windows XP...twice and still the same story! Also ran a test on the hardrive. Both the hardrive and memory check out ok. Pentium 4, 180 mhz, 2 100 GB western Digital Hard Drives and 1 GB rambus. Widows XP Proffessional. ... (more)

When I'm dialling up, the computer asks for my password. If I check the 'save password' box, it doesn't save the password I type in - instead, when I next dial up, it comes up with something else (I can't see what of course) that's wrong. I've also tried changing the password in the 'Connections' section of the 'Internet Properties' box that comes up if you choose 'settings' from the 'Dial Up Connections' box: but once I've typed in the password and selected OK, as soon as I go back into the same page, my password has gone and the computer's version is there instead. My PC was infected with one of the Sasser worms (I think....I'm pretty sure) and I followed all the steps from the microsft homepage, downloaded the removal tool and that's where my problem lies. The steps I took stoped my PC from shutting down however, any time I try to install the tool it gets about halfway down and closes(no mater what I do) then I can't finish the removal process. I've tried downloading and opening it, runing it from the download, saveing it in different places, nothing works it keeps closeing. Also if I try and use Norton, I can open it fine but when I select "scan for viruses" it closes as well. Does anybody know how to correct this problem or at least point me in the right direction? ... What happens is that I go to preview any of the 3D built in screen savers it will freeze and then the screen goes blank, I have to either hit the power button to hibernate and awake or the standby key on my keyboard and awaken it again. It will wake back up in safe mode and my computer will then say "it detected and recoved from a device failure". On the screen with my screen saver preview box it will read "could not find any compatible Direct3D devices". I saw a few posts about it not being able to enter into standby or hibernate mode, but my ? is, is this the same problem or something different, and has anyone else had this problem. It never seems to happen unless my computer comes out of Standby or Hibernate mode, but I don't like to test it too much as I don't want to be constantly be restarting my tower. Okay, since my files are corrupt, I tried to start WIndows using the Win XP back-up startup floppy used @ A: I set the floppy drive to read first in set up, no problems there. So, when I go to start the computer with the disc in the floppy drive, the disk starts up, but my keyboard shuts off and I cannot use it to choose the entries for what to do. I have a home network with a workgroup using DHCP. I took my laptop to a location to work on a problem and logged onto their network. I didn't change any settings, but was able to see their network. When I returned home, I could not see my workgroup computers from my laptop (or vice-versa). I can't even ping my laptop from other computers in my workgroup ... but I could ping my other workgroup computers from my laptop. A friend asked me to help with her computer. Yesterday while she was online se was bombarded with porn popups and she got a popup that said she had a parasite. i haven't seen any of this yet, so I don't know if the popup about the parasite was just an ad for some kind of software or not. Her internet connection is much slower than normal, she describes it as slower than AOL and she uses cable. Also she now has disruption in the display of games, there will be black streaks and boxes. Im not sure where to begin. I recommended Spybot and Ad-ware and both came up clean. She has a popup blocker and its not stopping them. I was thinking about doing a system restore since all of these problems started yesterday, but do you think it will work? Any thoughts about the problem? I would like to have some idea what the problem might be before I go over to try to help.
