I have just rebuilt my machine. Upgraded to Asus P4P800SE with 3.2Ghz hyperthreading chip and 2 Gig of ram. Also install an ATI 9800 PRO 128 Meg video card and Audigy II sound card. I put two 250 Gig Western Digital SATA drives along with one of my older 40 Gig Maxtor drive. I have an pre SP1 version of XP Professional and installed it on the 40 Gig hard drive since XP will not recognize the 250 Gig drives. But when I visit the windows update site I have over 40 critical updates and 20 some regular updates plus 3 drivers. On the critical updates I have 29 that fail to install including SP1 with no explanation as to why they fail. I then installed the drivers updates then thought to install the regular updates excluding the media player 9 and msn messenger hoping this might fix whatever was preventing the critical updates from installing. All failed to install and now I get a critical error on my internet explorer and it shutsdown preventing me from trying any further updates. ... (more) |

| Delete Cookies and History does not help...NOT A SPYWARE ISSUE (by =?Utf-8?B?Q3VydGlz?= on 7 Jun 2004, 1 reply) |
|---|
|
Hi, I have some web addresses that will not come off my internet explore page. I have deleted the history, deleted the files, cleared the cookies, and the sites remain. I know this is not spyware, as one of the sites I can not get rid of was one of my own that I created using another computer. For some reason, this site (4 of them, actually) will not get off of my address bar. That is, when I am in IE and I type the first letter of the name of the web site, the full name and address appears. For example, the first letter of the page is T, and when I enter W in my IE address bar or even my File addres bar (when not in IE) the page appears as "http://www.T...". I have cleared everything that I know how, including recent documents. After doing more then 30 different searches for this web address, the hard drive search continues to come up with nothing. However, when I start entering the first letter of this address, the entire address continues to appear. Where is this pulling this history from? Why when I have cleared out all of my IE history, cookies, internet on&off line files, and start menu history is this address not going away? It is like it is looked permantly into my system. ... | I'm using a statistics program that SAYS it autosaves every 10 minutes. Of course, it crashed and I had a reason to try to find WHERE it saved those files. Can't find it. I gave up and restarted the computer, so they're probably gone now, but I'd like to know for next time. I have XP installed. The help file says that for autosaves, one type of thing is saved in the operating environment temporary folder (what/where would that be?) as "autosave of filename.$as" and the other is saved to pgm.asv in the current active folder. What is the pgm? A name? Part of a file type? I couldn't find anything in any folders/drives I thought I was interacting with, but couldn't find how to search by filetype (I assume that either the $as or asv would be the type?). ... (more) |
