I too have this same problem. I have tried all the recommended fixes (dougknox, registering dlls, reinstalling from the XP CD, etc., etc.), and that eliminated the "missing helpctr.exe" messages, but help center still won't launch (HelpSvc.exe does pop up in Task Manager, but that's it). Whenever I go to log off my computer, it has started saying that HPCMPMGR (whatever that is) is running, and that by shutting my computer off, it could harm the file. Using a pentium machine with 500mb of ram. Windows XP lost power during a storm and when it was rebooted it boots normal and goes to Welcome screen. When the user is selected it loads and flashes to desktop for 1 second then returns to Welcome screen and logs off. I have tried to go to safe mode. i dont know how to get rid of the constant problem but if you ctrl alt delete and then end explorer in the cpu part iy will stop the prob str8 away all you then do is keep task manager up and then go to run and type explorer.exe and you have your system back. ... (more)

The shortcuts created from webpages and links in e-mails will not open the applicable website. My Internet Explorer page will open, but nothing else will proceed, such things at the"Refresh", "Internet Options" and "Help" are not even available. I get a dialog box that states, " Windows cannot find 'http://www.*.*' Please be sure entry is typed correctly, etc." I can open any of the sites from "Favorites" one IE is open. I can also open directly to my homepage from both the desktop icon and the Quick Launch" shortcut icon. I have deleted some of the shortcuts, shut down the computer, restarted and then gone to a particular web page and clicked to create a new shortcut. This does not work either. I have run System Restore for two dates prior to the time this problem surfaced. One thing that did occur that may or may not be of any signifcance. My ISP is Direcway. At their suggestion I downloaded a Beta version of MOZILLA as it was supposed to have a satellite accelator that would make accessing secure sites better. When it loaded it assumed the position of default browser. I did not want it for that and set IE again as the default. I did set a homepage in Mozilla for one of the secure sites I wished to go to, (my bank). I did not find Mozilla to be any better that IE so I uninstalled it according to the included uninstall directions. What can I do to restore the links/shortcuts so they will open the appropo webpage? ... (more)

The shortcuts created from webpages and links in e-mails will not open the applicable website. My Internet Explorer page will open, but nothing else will proceed, such things at the"Refresh", "Internet Options" and "Help" are not even available. Hi, I have xp pro on my pc, I have re-installed xp pro and now when the pc is starting it get to the bit where the screen says xp pro and the blue thing goes across the screen. The screen hangs and the blue thing stops moving. It doesnt get any further. I can strat the pc in safe mode but cant in normal mode. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks, ... (more)

After resizing taskbar to 3 times the normal height, autohide, and with a quicklaunch toolbar, XP Pro resizes it to 2 times the normal (or just normal) height after each reboot.

I have had the same setup since having XP with the only difference being the taskbar was 2 times the normal height at 800x600 resolution. I bought a new monitor, changed the resolution to 1024x768, installed the Samsung Monitor calibration software and have had issues with the shrinking taskbar ever since. ... (more)

I recently had a virus or spyware attack my computer and I used an up to date anti virus program and a spyware program.
HOWEVER, my computer continues to run very slow (not normal for my new system).

Also, when I run the adware program it finds 3 or 4 potential problems and so I quarantine them, then more pop up when I run the adware again even without having been on the internet between the scans for problems. ... (more)

I just did a clean reinstall on a new hard drive. Before I replaced the drive I was getting the message that my video driver would not load. This was constant and I was having no success in reinstalling on this hard drive. The new hard drive loaded smoothly however when I reboot on occasion the system will not load after the splash screen comes up and shuts down. If I disconnect the power cord and reboot the bootup will recycle twice on bios then reboot normally. ... (more)

HI Guys
XP Home on a friends PC always displays the advanced options menus at boot up. I have checked all system and conflicts etc. but it is squeaky clean and works perfectly when "start windows normally" is selected. There are no hardware problems at all. Is there any setting up anywhere that will stop this as I cannot find one in any menu or services etc. Somewhere there must be a file that XP writes to on shutdown setting a flag or something to tell it too start up with the advanced options menu displaying.
Any help gratefully received.
