internet connection lost?

Hi
we can connect to the 'net - but browser window not working
When we start up, a mesage appears which says " your profile could not be loaded - it may be corrupted"
Desktop has changed as well - shortcuts have disappeared
Files appear to have been moved
Have contacted BT, but they say it may be a prob with hard drive?
any ideas please?
