XP upgrade ->->Poor performance

message from kclark on 9 Jun 2004
I did a clean install of XP pro (from Win98SE) on a couple
of machines at home and danged if performance didn't
degrade noticeably. They're both hitting the hard disk
heavily while loading programs. Launching a program takes
like 35 seconds.
I played with changing swap file size and moving it to
another drive. Didn't seem to make any difference.

Anybody heard of this problem?

Are you using stock WinXP drivers for your older hardware? That might
be the cause of performance issues. You should check for motherboard,
chipset, and other hardware drivers from your manufacturer for peak
performance.

For example, if I use my DELL Dimension 4300 with stock WinXP drivers,
bootup is 3 1/2 minutes. With the Intel Application Accelerator (which
is appropriate for the i845 chipset in the machine), the startup time is
under 20 seconds...

XP is a much heavier OS than its predecessors.. look to increasing the
hardware capability of the computers..
