XP home edition |

I have a new HP system that had XP Home preinstalled. Since, using XP verus 2000, I have been very disappointed in the
reliability. I leave my system on continuously, and many times Outlook Express freezes up and will not terminate, which requires a reboot, and on 2 occussions, all inbox emails were erased. Also, when I naviate to Windows Explorer,
it does not list the compltete directory tree. This also requires a reboot to get it to work again. These are the main two
areas, however i have had other applications freeze and XP will or cannot end their task, a hard reboot is required.
Question: Has anyone experience this type of instability?
Also, I would like to upgrade to XP Professional, however, I have several applications that came and was preinstalled
with the system (I only have a recovery Disks) and would like to keep them.
Question: Can I install XP professional over XP home without formatting the Hard Drive?
Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Hi Larry,
Since you have a new system and it is already showing these faults,
consider making use of your warranty.
No, if I remember correctly, you cannot install XP Pro on Home without
formatting the hdd.
If you want to perform a clean install, this site has detailed
instructions:

You will have to get the drivers for the graphic card, sound card,
etc, from the manufacturer's website.
Good luck

Always keep antivirus and spy removal applications up-to-date, and scan regularly.
P.S. It's better not to keep your (windows) box ON 24x7.
