XP Pro freezing constantly

message from dustie on 31 May 2004
hi all

I've had my PC running Windows XP Pro for just over a year and never had any
major problems with it until now. It keeps freezing up for no apparent
reason. I've scanned the system using AdAware and SpyBot and I have the
free edition of Anti-Virus-Guard, yet nothing seems to be wrong.

Any ideas?

Always keep antivirus and spy removal applications (links on the bottom of the page) up-to-date, and scan regularly.

Look in the Event Viewer for corresponding error messages at the time of
system freezes. What is running at the time of these freezes ? Have you
installed any new software or hardware prior to the freeze problem ? Jym

Hi Jym.

Mate I am installing quite a few programs as I have just installed a new
Hard Disk and am slowly putting everything back on it.

At the time it started running slow it was immediately after running Windows
Update.

This is now the 2nd time this has happened as, last time, I just scrapped
windows and started again with a fresh install.
That fixed the problem until I ran the last of the updates again.

It must have something to do with that???

Can you use System Restore to revert back to a time where the updates were
not installed ? Jym

I tried doing that Jym, but when I do it says System restore can not go back
to the date.

I am ready to just re-install Windows XP again and not do the updates.

I have exactly the same thing happening to my computer, as does another
friend too.

This has only started happening since I downloaded the last Windows Updates
from Microsoft.

The computer freezes for about 5 minutes then goes again. I have checked the
CPU usage and, during a freeze, the CPU is pushed to 100% capacity with just
one program pushing it to 98%.

The program varies each time and I don't think it is the program that is at
fault, but something in the recent Windows updates.

Anyone else have this problem????

Garry
