Win XP-SP2 RC-1

Just installed XP service pack 2, Release Candidate 1 on
my Win XP-Pro machine and now I am having issues running
Windows Installer and Disk Manager.

When I attempt to install programs, such as the latest
Tech-Net monthly CD", using MSI, I get an error
stating "The Windows Installer Service Could Not Be
Accessed" Then it goes on to say that this could be
caused if you are running Windows in safe mode or the
installer program is not properly installed.

The Installer service is not startedby default, but when
I do start it manually, it doesn't help because I get the
same error regardless of what state the installer service
is in.

I would like to reinstall the MSI but I don't know how to
do this on XP without reinstalling the entire OS.
The "distributable" install package that I have found for
MSI is only for 2K and NT systems. If I try to run it on
XP it complains that it for the wrong OS.

Also, I can no longer access the Disk Manager. When I try
to start it I get an "Access Denied" error.

Can't get to the bottom of either of these issues. I am
logged in using the administrators account but that
doesn't seem to help at all.

I can't roll the system back because when I applied SP2-
RC1 the option to save backup files was grayed out so I
had to do the install without backing things up. Bummer!!

Greetings --

During the installation of WinXP's SP2 RC1, the option of backing
up the old files is "grayed out" because you're given no choice - the
files _will_ be backed up, whether you want it or not. If you do want
to uninstall the SP, Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Be sure
you've placed a checkmark in the "Show Updates" option at the top.

Bruce,

You are truly a God. Thanks for your help. I never
realized that check box was there. Thanks to your tip I
was finally able to successfully uninstall the service
pack and now things are back to normal.

hi,

try this

Log on to your computer as an administrator.
Click Start, and then click Run,cmd, and then click OK.
At the command prompt, "msiexec.exe /unregister", and then press ENTER.
Type "msiexec /regserver", and then press ENTER.

You may need to do the following;
Verify that the SYSTEM account has full control access permissions to the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT hive in the Windows registry.

Click Start, click Run, regedit
Click the following registry hive:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
On the Edit menu, click Permissions.
Need to make sure SYSTEM has full permissions.
If it's not there you need to add system and give it full permissions.
click add
from this location needs to be local machine
object name, type in system and then click check names then press okay, system will then appear in the group or user names, click on it then assing it full control and read.

didn't solve anything.

Yes I did. This is not a production machine. However, If
the problem happened on this machine it will probibly
happen on a large percentage of the other 200 machines on
my network. I want to be sure that I know how to resolve
the issue if/when it does happen.
