Win XP Home Won't Boot

Hi,
My Compaq Presario Laptop x1000 won't boot up into windows. It comes up with the "We apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully..." I've tried all the boot options, and none of those work, with each of them, the windows logo start screen appears, then the computer flashes me a blue screen of death for about 1/2 second (not enough to read anything on it of course) and the computer restarts, and i get to try it all again. I don't currently have my windows xp cd as i'm overseas but i can borrow one off of a friend. One time that i attempted to start it i got a message saying that ntoskrnl.exe was corrupt and that i should replace the file. I've tried going into the system recovery with my friends xp cd and i've checked out http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314477 but nothing there seems to work. Please Help, seeing as how i'd rather not reinstall windows, because there are doc's on there i'd rather not lose, and also because i'm lacking all my driver cd's etc. I'm grateful for any help you can give me.
