Wireless LAN connected but IE 6 not responding

I recently purchased a refurbished notebook with Windows XP. I have a wireless network setup with my other computers running very well. I have the new machine seeing and connecting to the network (wireless) but I am unable to get IE 6 to load any webpages. I get

"The page cannot be displayed"

error message. Does anyone have any suggestions?
