Virtual Memory problem

message from dee_ss2001 on 9 Jun 2004
I'm running XP home on a laptop and have bought an external usb/firewire
enclosure that I have put a HD inside to run with the system.

I thought it would be a good idea to split the burden of the swap file
between the two drives (internal and external), but it doesn't seem to work.
If I specify 'initial' and 'maximum' sizes for either drive and have the
other drive providing no virtual memory, then things seem as they should be.
But if I set the sizes for both drives, then windows only seems to be using
one of the drives.

I've tried setting the initial and maximum of both to the same value on both
drives and I've also tried setting them at 2 to 768 on both drives, but
whenever they are both on, windows only seems to want to use the one. I
can't see the virtual memory file anywhere to track it (is that possible?)
but I can see the size of file currently in use and the properties of the
second drive always tell me that there's nothing going on in there.

I've even had programs using up so much memory that windows tells me it's
having to increase the virtual memory in use, but still it doesn't seem to
do anything with the second drive??
