I have a machine that is currently running windows ME. Yesterday, As I was trying to upgrade to Win XP PRO I recieved an error message. I got a message saying that I have 445k in low memory and windows nt needs at least 512k in low memory. I have never seen this problem before. The machine specs are PIII 450mhz 312MB Ram. Please any reply will be helpful

make a backup of your autoexec.bat and config.sys rename them autoexec.old and config.old, you could either delete lines that you know you don't need like referances to soudblaster and mscdex, or you could delete all info in both those files, this should mean that no programs will load in the 640k memory area which should then allow you to do the upgrade.

not sure if windoes me will load up with an empty autoexec.bat and config.sys

It's always better to do fresh install... Even if you have Windows XP Upgrade CD, it will simply ask you to insert Windows ME CD during setup, to verify eligibility…

You’ll need to backup and restore your personal files though.

The machine has WIN ME right now. I am trying to install a fresh new copy of Win XP PRO (Full copy, not a update version). When I restart the PC with the WIN XP Pro cd inside and I get to the part where it says “Please press any key to start cd” and the key is pressed, I get this message saying that system is 445k in low memory and WIN NT needs at least 512k in low memory. After these there is no other option to be taken but to reboot the system and try again. Sorry for not being clear in the first post. Thanks in advance

when you load up, are you putting the upgrade cd in first and booting from the upgrade cd, or are you going into windows me?

i've had a look and it says windows me doensn't load autoexec.bat and config.sys files, if your doing it from windows something maybe loaded up.

could you go to start run and type command or cmd, at the command prompt type mem tou should see something along the following;

655360 bytes total conventional memory
655360 bytes available to msdos (this may differ)
626720 largest executable program size (this may differ)

you could you do the following and post back what you get.

thanks
