User accounts will not open |
| message from =?Utf-8?B?TmFyZA==?= on 3 Jun 2004 |
When I go to control panel and click on user accounts I get an error screen saying HTML application host has encountered a problem. How can I fix this? I'm at a loss of what to do next.

Hi Nard,
If you have Windows XP Pro, you can go to Start > Run > lusrmgr.msc
to get to the user accounts.
Also you can put the XP CD in the CD ROM, go to Start > Run and type
sfc /scannow
This should repair missing or damaged system files.
Good luck

Hi Roger,
Thanks for responding. I tried sfc/scannow and it didn't fix my problem. I was wondering if I should purge the cache. I read on another thread that might help. Have you tried that before? I do have XP Pro and ran lusrmgr.msc. but from there can I change passwords, pictures etc? I just can't understand why it just stopped working. I ran my virus checker and it runs clean.

Hi Nard,
You can try purging the cache and see if it works
Besides lusrmgr.msc you can go to Start > Run and type
control userpasswords2
You can change passwords and features of the account with this
program, though not pictures, I'm afraid.
Try performing a scan using ad-aware and spybot to see if you have
spyware. Back up your data.
Ad-aware

Spybot S&D

Lastly, you can go to IE> Tools > Internet Options > Advanced options
and disable third-party browser extensions.
Use BHODemon to determine which Browser Helper Objects you have,
though some are beneficial (Google toolbar) they can be used for
spyware.

Good luck, hope this helps

Hi Roger!
I run ad-aware and spybot every couple of days and they run clean. I turned off third party browser extensions and it still doesn't work. I'm going to try and purge the cache today. I ran the control userpasswords2 but was leery to make a change because I don't want to lose access to my files. Will I have normal access after the password change? Thanks so much for your patience and help.

Hi Nard.
You're welcome. You can use control userpasswords2 to change passwords
and you won't lose access unless you forget the password. You'll have
normal access using the new password.
Good luck
