Suggestions for XP Powerdown / Reboot Issue |
| message from Don Christine on 09 Jun 2004 |
Hello,
I have been trying to resolve an issue with a newly built PC
running Windows XP Professional - the issue being that when
I go to shutdown the machine (either using Start | Shutdown | Shutdown
or the shutdown command via command line), it shuts the system
down okay but then it reboots itself.
Machine is a Syntax SV266AD m/b with AMD XP 1900 cpu and
256 MB PC2100 266MHz DDR memory.
To date I have done the following to try and resolve the issue:
- Verified that the XP installation correctly picked up and installed the
ACPI
power mgmt from the BIOS (in Device Manager, checked Computer settings and
verified
that it was set up as an ACPI PC, and that it was operating correctly)
- Flashed the BIOS (Award) using the current BIOS from the Syntax website
- Set the PowerDownOnShutdown registry value to '1' (was '0') using regedit
I have picked up and installed all service packs, critical updates and
driver updates using
Windows Update.
Additional system information:
- ATI Radeon 9200 SE 128 MB DDR AGP8X Video
- Onboard LAN adapter for network and internet access (VT 6103)
- Onboard sound (AC97 2.2)
- Logitech M-S48 internet wheel mouse (using USB)
- Toshiba SD-R5112 CD-RW / DVD-RW
The machine runs perfectly...it just reboots instead of powering down.
To power it down I have to push the main power button in the front
of the case when it starts powering up.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Don Christine

Don,
This maybe over simplifying the problem, but have you tried using the
Restore feature? You could try restoring the computer back to a day
before the problem started. That's all I could think of. The Restore
feature is truly one of the best things about WinXP.

Thanks for the reply.
Unfortunately, it's a brand new machine that I built and it's been happening
right from the beginning.

Don,
Here is a website dedicated to just your problem. It may not solve
the problem, but maybe it and eliminate some possibilities.
