Sluggish startup in XP

message from PSimon on 6 Jun 2004
I am running Windows XP on a 1.7GHz processor with 256Mb of RAM. As time has
gone on, I have noticed that it has been taking longer and longer for the PC
to be ready got me to use when I start it up. I am up to about 6 minutes
from the time I select my username from the logon screen, to the time the PC
has settled down and the hourglass goes away.

I have been told I have too many things running in the background. Here are
some stats from Task Manager:

Processes: 63

Commit Charge: 373988K / 632612K

As I understand it, that 63 is way too high. My problem is I don't know
which applications to kill off and where/how to do it. All suggestions
greatly appreciated....

Hi,

How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP [Q310560]

Basically, most of what you will find on the startup tab is unnecessary.
